1⃣عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی عَبْدِاللَّهِ الصَّائِمُ یَشَمُّ الرَّیْحَانَ وَ الطِّیبَ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 113

Muhammad ibn Muslim said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a fasting person who smells fragrant plants and pleasant scents. The Imam replied: There is no problem!'

2⃣عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ قَالَ: کَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِذَا صَامَ تَطَیَّبُ بِالطِّیبِ وَ یَقُولُ الطِّیبُ تُحْفَةُ الصَّائِمِ.

Hasan ibn Rashid said: 'When Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) was fasting, he used perfume and said: A pleasant scent is a gift for the fasting person!'

3⃣عَنْ غِیَاثِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِیمَ عَنْ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ أَنَّ عَلِیّاً کَرِهَ الْمِسْکَ أَنْ یَتَطَیَّبَ بِهِ الصَّائِمُ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his father that Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) disliked a fasting person using musk as a fragrance!

4⃣عَنْ أَبِی بَصِیرٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: الصَّائِمُ یَدَّهِنُ بِالطِّیبِ وَ یَشَمُّ الرَّیْحَانَ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'A fasting person may use fragrant oil and smell aromatic plants!'

5⃣مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ قَالَ: سُئِلَ الصَّادِقُ عَنِ الْمُحْرِمِ یَشَمُّ الرَّیْحَانَ قَالَ لَا قِیلَ فَالصَّائِمُ قَالَ لَا قِیلَ یَشَمُّ الصَّائِمُ الْغَالِیَةَ وَ الدُّخْنَةَ قَالَ نَعَمْ قِیلَ کَیْفَ حَلَّ لَهُ أَنْ یَشَمَّ الطِّیبَ وَ لَا یَشَمَّ الرَّیْحَانَ قَالَ لِأَنَّ الطِّیبَ سُنَّةٌ وَ الرَّیْحَانَ بِدْعَةٌ لِلصَّائِمِ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) was asked about a person in the state of ihram who smells fragrant plants. He replied: 'No!' He was then asked: 'What about a fasting person?' He replied: 'No!'

Then he was asked: 'Can a fasting person smell strong perfumes or aromatic smoke?' He said: 'Yes!'

It was asked: 'Why is it permissible for him to smell perfume but not fragrant flowers?' He replied: 'Because perfume is a tradition (sunnah), while smelling flowers for a fasting person is an innovation (bid’ah)!'

6⃣قَالَ الصَّادِقُ مَنْ تَطَیَّبَ بِطِیبٍ أَوَّلَ النَّهَارِ وَ هُوَ صَائِمٌ لَمْ یَکَدْ یَفْقِدُ عَقْلَهُ.

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 86

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'A fasting person who applies perfume in the morning is less likely to lose their mental sharpness!'

7⃣عَنِ الصَّادِقِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَشَمَّ الصَّائِمُ الطِّيبَ إِلَّا الْمَسْحُوقَ مِنْهُ لِأَنَّهُ يَصْعَدُ مِنْهُ إِلَى دِمَاغِهِ

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no problem for a fasting person to smell pleasant scents, except for powdered fragrances, as they may travel up to the brain!'

8⃣عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ يَقُولُ لَا يَضُرُّ الصَّائِمَ مَا صَنَعَ إِذَا اجْتَنَبَ ثَلَاثَ ثَلَاثَ خِصَالٍ الطَّعَامَ وَ الشَّرَابَ وَ النِّسَاءَ وَ الِارْتِمَاسَ فِي الْمَاءِ.

Muhammad ibn Muslim said: 'I heard Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) say: A fasting person is not harmed by anything except for three things:'

- Eating and drinking

- Intimate relations

- Complete immersion in water

✅ Based on the above narrations, using and smelling perfume and pleasant scents is not prohibited for a fasting person. In fact, it is considered a gift for the fasting person and a sunnah. This permission is absolute and includes even strong perfumes.

✅ However, according to narration 7⃣, if the fragrance is in powder form and inhaling it causes particles to rise to the brain, it is discouraged.

✅ Additionally, according to narration 8⃣ and others, if a perfume or spray is used in such a way that its particles enter the throat like food, it is prohibited, as consuming food or drink invalidates the fast.
