Question 1967: What methods are recommended for fulfilling the obligation of gratitude for blessings?

قال الله تعالي : وَ اشْکُرُوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ إِنْ کُنْتُمْ إِیَّاهُ تَعْبُدُون

"And be grateful for the blessings of Allah, if you worship Him!"

📖 Surah An-Nahl, Ayah 114.

1⃣عَنِ الثُّمَالِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ علیه السلام قَالَ: الْعَبْدُ بَیْنَ ثَلَاثَةٍ بَلَاءٍ وَ قَضَاءٍ وَ نِعْمَةٍ فَعَلَیْهِ فِی الْبَلَاءِ مِنَ اللَّهِ الصَّبْرُ فَرِیضَةً وَ عَلَیْهِ فِی الْقَضَاءِ مِنَ اللَّهِ التَّسْلِیمُ فَرِیضَةً وَ عَلَیْهِ فِی النِّعْمَةِ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ الشُّکْرُ فَرِیضَةً

📚 Al-Khisal, Vol. 1, p. 43

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: A servant is always in one of three states: trial, decree, or blessing!

In trials from Allah, patience is obligatory! In divine decree, submission is obligatory! And in blessings from Allah, gratitude is obligatory!

2⃣ قَالَ الْجَوَادُ علیه السلام: نِعْمَةٌ لَا تُشْکَرُ کَسَیِّئَةٍ لَا تُغْفَرُ.

Imam Jawad (peace be upon him) said: A blessing that is not thanked for is like a sin that is not forgiven!

3⃣عَنْ أَبِی بَصِیرٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی عَبْداللَّهِ علیه السلام هَلْ لِلشُّکْرِ حَدٌّ إِذَا فَعَلَهُ الْعَبْدُ کَانَ شَاکِراً قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ مَا هُوَ قَالَ یَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَلَی کُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ عَلَیْهِ فِی أَهْلٍ وَ مَالٍ وَ إِنْ کَانَ فِیمَا أَنْعَمَ عَلَیْهِ فِی مَالِهِ حَقٌّ أَدَّاهُ....

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, p. 95

Abu Basir said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Is there a specific limit to gratitude that, if a servant fulfills it, he is considered grateful? He replied: Yes! I asked: What is it? He said: To praise Allah for every blessing upon his family and wealth, and to fulfill any duty associated with that blessing!

4⃣عَنْ مُعَمَّرِ بْنِ خَلَّادٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَاالْحَسَنِ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَیْهِ یَقُولُ: مَنْ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ عَلَی النِّعْمَةِ فَقَدْ شَکَرَهُ وَ کَانَ الْحَمْدُ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ تِلْکَ النِّعْمَة

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, p. 96

Muammar said: I heard Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) say: Whoever praises Allah for a blessing has fulfilled gratitude, and praising the blessing is superior!

5⃣عَنْ صَفْوَانَ الْجَمَّالِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْداللَّهِ علیه السلام قَالَ: قَالَ لِی مَا أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَی عَبْدٍ بِنِعْمَةٍ صَغُرَتْ أَوْ کَبُرَتْ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ إِلَّا أَدَّی شُکْرَهَا

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, p. 96

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Whenever Allah grants a servant a blessing, and he says 'Alhamdulillah,' he has fulfilled its gratitude, whether the blessing is small or large!

6⃣عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِاللَّه قَالَ: مَنْ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَیْهِ بِنِعْمَةٍ فَعَرَفَهَا بِقَلْبِهِ فَقَدْ أَدَّی شُکْرَهَا

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Whoever recognizes a blessing from Allah in his heart has fulfilled its gratitude!

7⃣ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: When you begin your morning and evening, say this ten times:

اللَّهُمَّ مَا أَصْبَحَتْ بِی مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ أَوْ عَافِیَةٍ فِی دِینٍ أَوْ دُنْیَا فَمِنْکَ وَحْدَکَ لَا شَرِیکَ لَکَ لَکَ الْحَمْدُ وَ لَکَ الشُّکْرُ بِهَا عَلَیَّ یَا رَبِّ حَتَّی تَرْضَی وَ بَعْدَ الرِّضَا

If you say this, you will have certainly fulfilled the gratitude for all that Allah has bestowed upon you that day and night!

8⃣عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ علیهما السلام قَالَ: مَنْ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَقَدْ أَدَّی شُکْرَ کُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ لِلَّهِ عَزَّوَجَلَّ عَلَیْهِ الْخَبَرَ

📚 Al-Khisal, Vol. 1, p. 144

Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) said: Whoever says 'Alhamdulillah' has certainly fulfilled the gratitude for every divine blessing upon him!

9⃣ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Whoever, in the morning, says 'Alhamdulillah Rabbil Aalameen' four times has fulfilled the gratitude for that day, and whoever says it four times at night has fulfilled the gratitude for that night!

0⃣1⃣ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Gratitude for blessings is to avoid prohibited actions, and complete praise is to say: 'Alhamdulillah Rabbil Aalameen.'
