✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:

1⃣ عن عبدالله بن سنان عن أبی عبدالله قال سمعته یقول إن رسول الله بنی مسجده بالسمیط ثم إن المسلمین کثروا فقالوا یا رسول الله لو أمرت بالمسجد فزید فیه فقال نعم فأمر به فزید فیه و بناه بالسعیدة ثم إن المسلمین کثروا فقالوا یا رسول الله لو أمرت بالمسجد فزید فیه فقال نعم فأمر به فزید فیه و بنی جداره بالأنثی و الذکر ثم اشتد علیهم الحر فقالوا یا رسول الله لو أمرت بالمسجد فظلل فقال نعم فأمر به فأقیمت فیه سوار من جذوع النخل ثم طرحت علیه العوارض و الخصف و الإذخر فعاشوا فیه حتی أصابتهم الأمطار فجعل المسجد یکف علیهم فقالوا یا رسول الله لو أمرت بالمسجد فطین فقال لهم رسول الله لا عریش کعریش موسي

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 295

Abdullah ibn Sinan said: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) built the walls of his mosque with simple bricks. Then the Muslims increased in number and said: O Messenger of Allah! If only you would order the mosque to be expanded! So he said: Yes! And he ordered it to be expanded, and its walls were built with one and a half bricks. Then the Muslims increased further and said: O Messenger of Allah! If only you would order the mosque to be expanded again! So he said: Yes! And he ordered it to be expanded, and its walls were built with two bricks.

Then the heat became intense for them, and they said: O Messenger of Allah! If only you would order a shade to be built over the mosque! So he said: Yes! And he ordered pillars to be erected from palm tree trunks, and crossbeams, palm leaves, and idhkhir grass were placed over them.

They lived under it until the rain came, and the mosque began to leak on them! So they said: O Messenger of Allah! If only you would order it to be plastered with clay! So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: No! A shade made of wood and branches, like the shade of Musa (peace be upon him)!'

2⃣قال أبوجعفرٍ علیه السلام أَوَّلُ ما یَبْدَأُ بِهِ قَائِمُنَا سُقُوفُ الْمَسَاجِدِ فَیُکَسِّرُهَا و یَأْمُرُ بِهَا فَیُجْعَلُ عَرِیشاً کَعَرِیشِ مُوسی

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 236

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'The first thing our Qaim (peace be upon him) will do is demolish the roofs of the mosques and order them to be replaced with shades made of wood and branches, like the shade of Musa (peace be upon him)!'

3⃣سأل عبیدالله بن علی الحلبی أباعبدالله علیه السلام عَنِ الْمَساجِدِ الْمُظَلَّلَةِ یُکْرَهُ الْقِیَامُ فِیها قال نَعَمْ ولَکِنْ لا تَضُرُّکُمُ الصَّلَاةُ فیها

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 235

Halabi asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about mosques with roofs and whether standing in them is disliked. The Imam said: 'Yes! But praying in them will not harm you.'

4⃣عن الحلبی قال: سُئِلَ أبوعبداللَّه عَنِ الْمَساجِدِ الْمُظَلَّلَةِ أَیُکْرَهُ الصَّلَاةُ فِیهَا قال نَعَمْ ولَکِنْ لَا یَضُرُّکُمُ الْیَوْمَ و لَوْ قَدْ کان الْعَدْلُ لَرَأَیْتُمْ کَیْفَ یُصْنَعُ فی ذَلِک

Halabi said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about mosques with roofs and whether praying in them is disliked. He said: 'Yes! But today it will not harm you, and if justice is established, you will see what will be done about it!'

5⃣ عن الحلبي قال: سألته عن المساجد المظللة يكره القيام فيها قال نعم و لكن لا تضركم الصلاة فيها اليوم و لو قد كان العدل لرأيتم أنتم كيف يصنع في ذلك

Halabi said: I asked (the Imam, peace be upon him) about mosques with roofs and whether standing in them is disliked. He said: 'Yes! But today praying in them will not harm you, and if justice is established, you will see what will be done about it!'

6⃣عن عمرو بن جمیع قال: سألت أباجعفر عن الصلاة فی المساجد الْمُصَوَّرَة فقال أَکْرَهُ ذَلکَ ولَکنْ لا یَضُرُّکُمْ ذلک الیوم و لَوْ قَدْ قام الْعَدلُ رَأَیْتُمْ کَیفَ یُصْنَعُ فی ذَلک

Amr ibn Jami' said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about praying in mosques with images. The Imam said: 'I consider it disliked! But today it will not harm you, and if justice is established, you will see what will be done about it!'

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) regarding mosque roofs is that they should be shaded with branches and wood, and concrete roofs and the like are innovations. Standing and praying in mosques with roofs and images is disliked.
