Question 1955: Is it recommended to kiss the forehead of someone returning from Hajj, Umrah, Karbala, or similar trips?

1⃣عن یونس بن ظبیان عن أَبِی عَبْداللَّه قال: إِنَّ لَکُمْ لَنُوراً تُعْرَفُونَ بِهِ فِی الدُّنْیَا حَتَّی إِنَ أَحَدَکُمْ إِذَا لَقِیَ أَخَاهُ قَبَّلَهُ فی مَوْضِعِ النُّورِ مِنْ جَبْهَتِه

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: There is a light for you (the Shia) by which you are recognized in the world, such that when one of you meets his (religious) brother, he kisses the place of light on his forehead!
2⃣عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْعَسْکَرِیِّ عن آبَائِهِ قال: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّه لَمَّا جَاءَهُ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَبِی طَالِبٍ مِنَ الْحَبَشَةِ قَامَ إِلَیْهِ وَ اسْتَقْبَلَهُ اثْنَتَیْ عَشْرَةَ خُطْوَةً وَ عَانَقَهُ وَ قَبَّلَ ما بَیْنَ عَیْنَیْهِ...

Imam Hasan al-Askari (peace be upon him) narrated from his forefathers that when Ja’far ibn Abi Talib returned from Abyssinia, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) rose, walked twelve steps to greet him, embraced him, and kissed him between his eyes!
3⃣عن بسطام عن أبی عبداللَّه قال: قال لَهُ رَجُلٌ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاکَ أَ یَلْتَزِمُ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ فقال نَعَمْ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ یَوْمَ افْتَتَحَ خَیْبَرَ أَتَاهُ الْخَبَرُ أَنَّ جَعْفَراً قَدْ قَدِمَ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ ما أَدْرِی بِأَیِّهِمَا أَنَا أَشَدُّ سُرُوراً بِقُدُومِ جَعْفَرٍ أَوْ بِفَتْحِ خَیْبَرَ قال فَلَمْ یَلْبَثْ أَنْ جَاءَ جَعْفَرٌ قال فَوَثَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَالْتَزَمَهُ و قَبَّلَ ما بَیْنَ عَیْنَیْهِ

Bustam said: A man asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): May I sacrifice myself for you! Should a man embrace his religious brother? The Imam replied: Yes! Indeed, on the day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) conquered Khaybar, he was informed that Ja’far had arrived. The Prophet said: I do not know whether I am happier for Ja’far’s arrival or the conquest of Khaybar!
The Imam continued: Soon after, Ja’far arrived! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) rose, embraced him, and kissed him between his eyes!
4⃣عن عَلِیٍّ قال: إِذَا قَدِمَ أَخُوکَ مِنْ مَکَّةَ فَقَبِّلْ بَیْنَ عَیْنَیْهِ وَ فَاهُ الَّذِی قَبَّلَ بِهِ الْحَجَرَ الْأَسْوَدَ الَّذِی قَبَّلَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَ الْعَیْنَ الَّتِی نَظَرَ بِهَا إِلَی بَیْتِ اللَّهِ وَ قَبَّلَ مَوْضِعَ سُجُودِهِ وَ وَجْهِهِ وَ إِذَا هَنَّأْتُمُوهُ فَقُولُوا لَهُ قَبِلَ اللَّهُ نُسُکَکَ وَ رَحِمَ سَعْیَکَ وَ أَخْلَفَ عَلَیْکَ نَفَقَتَکَ وَ لَا جَعَلَهُ آخِرَ عَهْدِکَ بِبَیْتِهِ الْحَرَامِ.

Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) said: When your brother returns from Mecca, kiss him between his eyes, his mouth (which kissed the Black Stone that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, also kissed), his eyes (which saw the Kaaba), and his forehead where he prostrated. Congratulate him and say:
قَبِلَ اللَّهُ نُسُکَکَ وَ رَحِمَ سَعْیَکَ وَ أَخْلَفَ عَلَیْکَ نَفَقَتَکَ وَ لَا جَعَلَهُ آخِرَ عَهْدِکَ بِبَیْتِهِ الْحَرَامِ.
5⃣قَالَ الصَّادِقُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ کَانَ یَقُولُ لِلْقَادِمِ مِنْ مَکَّةَ قَبِلَ اللَّهُ مِنْکَ وَ أَخْلَفَ عَلَیْکَ نَفَقَتَکَ وَ غَفَرَ ذَنْبَکَ.
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 299
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to say to those returning from Mecca:
قَبِلَ اللَّهُ مِنْکَ وَ أَخْلَفَ عَلَیْکَ نَفَقَتَکَ وَ غَفَرَ ذَنْبَکَ
6⃣قال أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ وَقِّرُوا الْحَاجَّ وَ الْمُعْتَمِرَ فَإِنَّ ذَلِکَ وَاجِبٌ عَلَیْکُمْ.

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Respect those who have performed Hajj and Umrah, for this is obligatory upon you!
7⃣عن أَبِی عَبْداللَّه قال کَانَ عَلِیُّ بْنُ الْحُسَیْنِ یَقُولُ بَادِرُوا بِالسَّلَامِ عَلَی الْحَاجِّ وَ الْمُعْتَمِرِ وَ مُصَافَحَتِهِمْ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تُخَالِطَهُمُ الذُّنُوبُ.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 256
Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) said: Hasten to greet and shake hands with those who have performed Hajj and Umrah before sins mix with them!
✅ Based on the above and other narrations, it is recommended to show respect, greet, shake hands, kiss between the eyes, and congratulate those returning from Mecca.
In general, kissing the forehead of a believing brother upon meeting is also recommended.
