Question 1946: What is Barzakh, and what are its states for an individual?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 242
Amr bin Yazid said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): I heard you say, 'All our Shia, despite what is within them, will be in Paradise!' The Imam replied: 'I spoke the truth! By Allah, all of them will be in Paradise!' I said: 'May I be your ransom! The sins are many and great!' The Imam said: 'But on the Day of Resurrection, all of you will be in Paradise through the intercession of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) or his successor. However, by Allah, I fear for you in Barzakh!' I asked: 'What is Barzakh?' He replied: 'The grave, from the moment of death until the Day of Resurrection!'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 242
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'The grave speaks every day, saying: I am the house of loneliness! I am the house of fear! I am the house of worms! I am the grave! I am a garden from the gardens of Paradise, or a pit from the pits of Hell!'
📚 Al-Amali by Al-Tusi, p. 38
Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) wrote to Muhammad bin Abi Bakr: 'O servants of Allah! After death, for one who is not forgiven, the grave is more severe than death itself! Beware of the narrowness, darkness, and isolation of the grave! ... Indeed, the tight and constrained life Allah has warned His enemy of in Surah Taha (20:124) refers to the punishment of the grave!'
📚 Ilal al-Sharayi, Vol. 1, p. 292
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his ancestors that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'The compression of the grave for a believer is an atonement for what they have neglected or wasted in terms of blessings!'
📚 Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 6, p. 218
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Barzakh is the grave, where the rewards and punishments between this world and the Hereafter occur!'
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, Barzakh is the realm of the grave that lasts from the time of a person's death until the Day of Resurrection. For those who have not attained complete forgiveness before death, the grave may entail difficulties such as punishment, compression, fear, darkness, narrowness, and isolation, depending on the type and extent of their sins. However, individuals who pass away with sound Shia beliefs, even if they have committed sins, experience these hardships as a form of purification, preparing them to enter Paradise on the Day of Resurrection through the intercession of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and his progeny.
Certain sins are specifically mentioned in narrations as causes of punishment in the grave, while various deeds are recommended in narrations to rescue oneself from the fear, punishment, and compression of the grave. It is appropriate to abandon all sins and engage in righteous acts, particularly those that safeguard one in Barzakh, so that one's grave becomes a garden from the gardens of Paradise, God willing.
