✅ Answer: The Angel of Death, also known as Azrael (peace be upon him), is one of the close angels of Allah who, according to Quranic verses and narrations, is tasked by Allah with the responsibility of taking souls.

It is clear that the Angel of Death acts according to divine command and does not deviate from Allah's orders due to personal considerations with the dying person.

On the other hand, there is no narration from the infallibles recommending offering prayer as a gift to the Angel of Death to ease the pangs of death. Such a recommendation is based on the personal preferences of some preachers who sometimes speak as if religion has been entrusted to them and that Allah will reward according to their whims!

✅ However, consider the following narrations:

1⃣عن أبي ابي عبدالله في حديث قال :.... وَ أَتَاهُ مَلَکُ الْمَوْتِ یَقَبْضُ رُوحِهِ فَیُنَادِی رُوحَهُ فَتَخْرُجُ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ فَأَمَّا الْمُؤْمِنُ فَمَا یُحِسُّ بِخُرُوجِهَا وَ ذَلِکَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَی یا أَیَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ارْجِعِی إِلی رَبِّکِ راضِیَةً مَرْضِیَّةً فَادْخُلِی فِی عِبادِی وَ ادْخُلِی جَنَّتِی ثُمَّ قَالَ ذَلِکَ لِمَنْ کَانَ وَرِعاً مُوَاسِیاً لِإِخْوَانِهِ وَصُولًا لَهُمْ....

📚 Al-Mahasin, Volume 1, Page 177

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a narration: The Angel of Death comes to take the soul of a (Shi’a) believer and calls out to his soul, which then departs from the body without the believer feeling it. This is the meaning of Allah's words in Surah Al-Fajr: 'O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing, and enter among My servants and My Paradise.' Then he added: This is for the Shi’a who is pious, helps his fellow believers, and maintains connections with them....!

2⃣عَنْ أَبِی مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَسْکَرِیِّ عَنْ آبَائِهِ علیهم السلام قَالَ: قِیلَ لِلصَّادِقِ علیه السلام صِفْ لَنَا الْمَوْتَ قَالَ علیه السلام لِلْمُؤْمِنِ کَأَطْیَبِ رِیحٍ یَشَمُّهُ فَیَنْعُسُ لِطِیبِهِ وَ یَنْقَطِعُ التَّعَبُ وَ الْأَلَمُ کُلُّهُ عَنْهُ وَ لِلْکَافِرِ کَلَسْعِ الْأَفَاعِی وَ لَدْغِ الْعَقَارِبِ أَوْ أَشَدَّ قِیلَ فَإِنَّ قَوْماً یَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ أَشَدُّ مِنْ نَشْرٍ بِالْمَنَاشِیرِ وَ قَرْضٍ بِالْمَقَارِیضِ وَ رَضْخٍ بِالْأَحْجَارِ وَ تَدْوِیرِ قُطْبِ الْأَرْحِیَةِ عَلَی الْأَحْدَاقِ قَالَ کَذَلِکَ هُوَ عَلَی

بَعْضِ الْکَافِرِینَ وَ الْفَاجِرِینَ....

📚 Uyun Akhbar Al-Ridha, Page 274

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) was asked to describe death. He said: For a believer, it is like the most pleasant fragrance he smells, causing a state of drowsiness before sleep, removing all pain and suffering. But for a disbeliever, it is like the bite of snakes and the sting of scorpions or even more severe!

He was further asked: Some say that dying is more painful than being sawn apart, cut with scissors, crushed by stones, or having a millstone turned over the eyeballs. The Imam replied: For some disbelievers and evildoers, it is indeed like this!

3⃣عَنِ الْهَیْثَمِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْداللَّهِ قَالَ: دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَلَی رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ وَ هُوَ یَجُودُ بِنَفْسِهِ فَقَالَ یَا مَلَکَ الْمَوْتِ ارْفُقْ بِصَاحِبِی فَإِنَّهُ مُؤْمِنٌ فَقَالَ أَبْشِرْ یَا مُحَمَّدُ فَإِنِّی بِکُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ رَفِیقٌ....

📚 Al-Kafi, Volume 3, Page 136

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) visited one of his companions who was dying. He said: O Angel of Death! Be gentle with my companion, for he is a believer! The Angel of Death replied: O Muhammad (peace be upon him), rejoice! I am kind and gentle with every believer!

✅ Indeed, the Angel of Death is a divine agent, and it is our faith, piety, acts of helping others, and maintaining relationships that cause him to be gentle with us and make the pangs of death easier.
