Question 1926: Is withdrawal permissible with a permanent wife?
✅ Answer: In the narrations below, withdrawal refers to the act of avoiding the transfer of sperm into the wife’s womb during intercourse to prevent pregnancy.
Now consider the following narrations:
📚 *Al-Kafi*, Vol. 5, p. 504
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about withdrawal. The Imam said: 'It is at the discretion of the man; he may direct it wherever he wishes.'
📚 *Al-Kafi*, Vol. 5, p. 504
Abdulrahman said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about withdrawal. The Imam said: 'It is the man's choice.'
📚 *Al-Kafi*, Vol. 5, p. 504
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) saw no issue with withdrawal and recited this verse: “And when your Lord took from the children of Adam—from their loins—their descendants” (Qur'an 7:172). Whatever Allah has decreed will come forth, even if it is on a hard rock!'
📚 *Al-Kafi*, Vol. 5, p. 504
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no issue with withdrawal from a free woman, whether she agrees or not, as it is not her right.'
📚 *Tahdhib*, Vol. 7, p. 461
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I asked Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): 'If a man has a free woman as his wife, can he withdraw?' The Imam said: 'It is up to the man: if he wishes to withdraw, he may, and if not, he may refrain.'
📚 *Tahdhib*, Vol. 7, p. 417
Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them) was asked about withdrawal. The Imam said: 'There is no issue with it for a slave woman. As for a free woman, I consider it disliked unless it is stipulated at the time of marriage.'
It has also been narrated from Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) with a similar wording, except that he added: 'Unless the wife consents or it is stipulated during the marriage contract.'
📚 *Al-Faqih*, Vol. 3, p. 443
Ya'qub Ja'fi said: I heard Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) say: 'Withdrawal is permissible in six cases: a woman who is certain she cannot bear children, an elderly woman, a quarrelsome woman (i.e., one who is abusive and foul-mouthed), an ignorant and foul-mouthed woman, a woman who does not breastfeed her child, and a slave woman.'
✅ Based on the above narrations, withdrawal is at the discretion of the man, and he can place his sperm wherever he wishes.
However, considering narration 6⃣ and others, withdrawal with a permanent free wife is disliked unless the wife consents, the man has stipulated it during the marriage contract, or the woman falls into the categories mentioned in narration 7⃣ and similar cases, in which case there is no dislike. Nevertheless, permission for withdrawal is mentioned in all cases within the narrations.
