Question 1915: If someone commits adultery with his wife's sister before or after marriage, does it make his wife permanently forbidden to him?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚 *Al-Kāfi*, Vol. 5, p. 415
It was asked of Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them) about a man who commits adultery with a woman: 'Can he marry her daughter?' The Imam replied: 'No! But if he already has a wife, and then, after marrying that woman, commits adultery with her mother, daughter, or sister, his wife does not become permanently forbidden to him. Indeed, what is forbidden does not corrupt what is lawful!'
📚 *Al-Faqih*, Vol. 3, p. 416
Abdullah ibn Sinan said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man who commits adultery with his wife’s sister: 'Does this make his wife permanently forbidden to him?' The Imam replied: 'Indeed, what is forbidden does not corrupt what is lawful, and through what is lawful, the forbidden is corrected!'
📚 *Al-Tahdhib*, Vol. 7, p. 329
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'If a man commits adultery with a woman, her daughter is never lawful for him. If he marries her daughter before committing adultery with her, but has not yet had intercourse with her, the marriage becomes invalid. However, if he marries her daughter, has intercourse with her, and then commits adultery with the mother of the girl, this adultery does not invalidate his marriage to her daughter, as long as he has had intercourse with her. The saying 'what is forbidden does not corrupt what is lawful' applies in this case!'
✅ Based on the texts and principles mentioned in the above narrations and others, if a man, after marrying a woman and having intercourse with her, commits adultery with her mother, daughter, or sister, this forbidden act does not make his wife permanently forbidden to him.
However, if this adultery occurs before he marries her or before having intercourse with her, her daughter becomes permanently forbidden to him and he can never marry her.
However, if a man commits adultery with a woman, in the narrations and hadiths of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), this adultery does not make the woman's sister permanently forbidden to him, whether the adultery happens before or after marriage, but the severe consequences of the major sin of adultery are still applicable.
