1⃣عَنْ عَبْداللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ قال قَالَ أَبُوعَبْداللَّهِ: سَتُصِیبُکُمْ شُبْهَةٌ فَتَبْقَوْنَ بِلَا عَلَمٍ یُرَی وَ لَا إِمَامٍ هُدًی لَا یَنْجُو مِنْهَا إِلَّا مَنْ دَعَا بِدُعَاءِ الْغَرِیقِ قُلْتُ وَ کَیْفَ دُعَاءُ الْغَرِیقِ قَالَ تَقُولُ یَا اللَّهُ یَا رَحْمَانُ یَا رَحِیمُ یَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِی عَلَی دِینِکَ فَقُلْتُ یَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ وَ الْأَبْصَارِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِی عَلَی دِینِکَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّوَجَلَّ مُقَلِّبُ الْقُلُوبِ وَ الْأَبْصَارِ وَ لَکِنْ قُلْ کَمَا أَقُولُ یَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِی عَلَی دِینِکَ.

Abdullah bin Sinan narrates: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Soon a period of doubt will come upon you where you will remain without a visible sign and without a guiding Imam. Only those who recite the Dua al-Ghareeq will be saved from it! I asked: What is the Dua al-Ghareeq? He replied: You say:

یَا اللَّهُ یَا رَحْمَانُ یَا رَحِیمُ یَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِی عَلَی دِینِکَ

من گفتم : «یَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ وَ الْأَبْصَارِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِی عَلَی دِینِکَ»(چطور)؟ امام فرمودند : اللَّه «مُقَلِّبُ الْقُلُوبِ وَ الْأَبْصَارِ» هست ولی همانگونه که من می گویم بگو : یَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِی عَلَی دِینِکَ!

2⃣عَنِ النَّوْفَلِیِّ عَنِ السَّکُونِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْداللَّهِ قال قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ سَیَأْتِی عَلَی النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ تَخْبُثُ فِیهِ سَرَائِرُهُمْ وَ تَحْسُنُ فِیهِ عَلَانِیَتُهُمْ طَمَعاً فِی الدُّنْیَا لَا یُرِیدُونَ بِهِ مَا عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ یَکُونُ دِینُهُمْ رِیَاءً لَا یُخَالِطُهُمْ خَوْفٌ یَعُمُّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابٍ فَیَدْعُونَهُ دُعَاءَ الْغَرِیقِ فَلَا یَسْتَجِیبُ لَهُمْ.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, p. 296

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: A time will soon come upon the people when, out of greed for worldly gain, their inner selves will be corrupted while their outward appearance will seem virtuous. They will not seek what is with Allah; their faith will be for show, devoid of true fear. Allah will bring them a punishment, and they will call upon Him like a drowning person, but it will not be answered!

3⃣ Ibn Abi Hamza narrates: I heard Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) telling his son: O my son, anyone who faces a calamity or trial should perform complete ablution, pray two or four units of prayer, and at the end say:

یَا مَوْضِعَ کُلِّ شَکْوَی وَ یَا سَامِعَ کُلِّ نَجْوَی وَ شَاهِدَ کُلِ مَلَإٍ وَ عَالِمَ کُلِّ خَفِیَّةٍ وَ یَا دَافِعَ مَا یَشَاءُ مِنْ بَلِیَّةٍ وَ یَا خَلِیلَ إِبْرَاهِیمَ وَ یَا نَجِیَّ مُوسَی وَ یَا مُصْطَفِیَ مُحَمَّدٍ أَدْعُوکَ دُعَاءَ مَنِ اشْتَدَّتْ فَاقَتُهُ وَ قَلَّتْ حِیلَتُهُ وَ ضَعُفَتْ قُوَّتُهُ دُعَاءَ الْغَرِیقِ الْغَرِیبِ الْمُضْطَرِّ الَّذِی لَا یَجِدُ لِکَشْفِ مَا هُوَ فِیهِ إِلَّا أَنْتَ یَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِینَ

For there is no one who recites this prayer without Allah alleviating their trouble, God willing.

4⃣عَن عَلِیِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْهُمْ قَالَ فِیمَا وَعَظَ اللَّهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ بِهِ عِیسَی .... یَا عِیسَی ادْعُنِی دُعَاءَ الْغَرِیقِ الْحَزِینِ الَّذِی لَیْسَ لَهُ مُغِیثٌ...

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 8, p. 138

Ali ibn Asbat narrates from Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) that they said: Among the counsel Allah Almighty gave to Jesus (peace be upon him) was this: 'O Jesus, call upon Me like a sorrowful drowning person with no one to help!'

✅ According to the above narrations and the literal meaning, 'Ghareeq' refers to a person drowning in water, in a state of utmost desperation, with no savior but Allah. The Dua al-Ghareeq, in essence, is a supplication of such a person, calling out with sincerity and urgency. Based on narration 1⃣, the wording of the Dua al-Ghareeq is: 'Ya Allah, Ya Rahman, Ya Rahim, Ya Muqallib al-Qulub' (O Allah, O Merciful, O Compassionate, O Controller of Hearts), followed by one’s specific request.

✅ Especially during the period of occultation, it is fitting to cultivate the sincerity and desperation of a drowning person within ourselves and say as the Imam has taught us:

یَا اللَّهُ یَا رَحْمَانُ یَا رَحِیمُ یَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِی عَلَی دِینِک

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَجِّلْ لِوَلِیِّکَ الْفَرَجَ وَ الْعَافِیَةَ وَ النَّصْر
