Question 1888: We live in France and are unable to find Sidr and Camphor for washing the deceased. What should we do in this case?
✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 140
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:
The deceased is washed once with (water and) Sidr, another time with water that has camphor mixed in it, and another time with pure water, then the body is shrouded....
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 139
Ibn Maskan says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the method of washing the deceased. Imam said: Wash the deceased with water and Sidr, then follow it with water and camphor, and if there is any Zareera (herb), wash him again, and for the third time, wash him with pure water.
I asked: Should the entire body be washed three times? He said: Yes!
I asked: When the washing is done, should there be clothing (or cloth) on him? Imam said: If you can, have him wear a shirt, then wash him under the shirt!
And he said: For the one who washes the deceased, I would like him to wrap a cloth around his hand while washing!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 140
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The deceased is washed three times: once with Sidr, once with water containing camphor, and once more with pure water, and then the body is shrouded!
📚 Al-Mahasin, Vol. 1, p. 245
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: People are commanded and prohibited, and anyone who has a legitimate excuse, Allah will accept his excuse.
✅ Based on the above and other narrations, the deceased is washed three times: the first with water and Sidr, the second with water and camphor, and the third with pure water, and this duty and command must be carried out.
✅ However, if for any reason Sidr and camphor are not accessible, according to the principle mentioned in narration 4⃣ and others, when servants are commanded to do something but have a valid excuse, Allah accepts their excuse. Therefore, if Sidr and camphor are not available, the deceased should be washed three times with pure water, then shrouded and buried.
