Question 1886: What is the time frame for performing the Nafl prayers after Maghrib?
✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 2, p. 113
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Do not leave the four rak'ahs after Maghrib prayer, whether you are traveling or at home, even if a group of horsemen are seeking you!'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 439
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Never leave the four rak'ahs after Maghrib prayer, whether you are traveling or at home!'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 443
Abi Fawaris says: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) forbade me from speaking between the rak'ahs of Maghrib prayer!
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 2, p. 113
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever performs Maghrib prayer, then does the recommended acts (tahiyyat) and speaks nothing (except for dhikr) until they perform two rak'ahs, these two rak'ahs will be written in `Aliyyin (the highest place in Paradise). And if they perform four rak'ahs, one accepted Hajj will be written for them!'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 2, p. 258
Ismail bin Jaber says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the time of Maghrib prayer; Imam said: 'Between sunset and the disappearance of the red twilight (hommara al-maghrebiya)!'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 2, p. 262
Zurarah says: I heard Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) say: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not perform the prayer during the day until the sun had passed its zenith.... Until he said: And he performed Maghrib prayer when the sun set. When the red twilight (hommara al-maghrebiya) disappeared, the time for Isha' prayer enters, and the end time for Maghrib prayer is when the red color fades.'
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, the Nafl of Maghrib consists of four rak'ahs, which are two sets of two rak'ahs. The start time is immediately after the Maghrib prayer, and since the end time of Maghrib prayer is when the red twilight disappears, the end time for Nafl Maghrib also ends with the conclusion of the first time of Maghrib prayer.
Therefore, the time frame for performing the Nafl prayers of Maghrib is from after Maghrib prayer until the disappearance of the red twilight in the west.
✅ However, there are narrations that allow the performance of Nafl prayers outside of its prescribed time, though it is considered qada' (missed).
✅ The above narrations recommend performing the Nafl of Maghrib after the Maghrib prayer and its recommended acts, and before speaking anything other than the divine dhikr.
