Question 1860: Is it correct to pour rose water and other fragrant substances on the shroud of the deceased in the grave?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, Page 145
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Camphor is the Hanoot (the substance used for perfuming the body of the deceased)!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, Page 147
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: Do not fumigate the shrouds, and do not apply any fragrance to your deceased other than camphor, because the deceased is like someone in the state of Ihram (pilgrimage)!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, Page 147
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Do not heat water for the deceased, do not hasten fire for him, and do not apply musk in the Hanoot!
📚 Qurb al-Isnad, Page 75
Ibrahim ibn Muhammad Ja'fari said: I saw Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) shaking musk off the shroud with his sleeve and saying: This is not part of the Hanoot!
✅ Based on the above narrations, perfuming the deceased should only be done with camphor, which is the Hanoot. Fumigating the shroud and applying musk or other perfumes to the deceased or their shroud is forbidden.
Therefore, the practice among people of pouring a significant amount of rose water on the shroud of the deceased after placing them in the grave is against the above narrations and has no basis in the traditions of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them all). The deceased and their shroud should only be perfumed with camphor.
✅ The use of musk and other perfumes for the deceased was practiced by the followers of Umar and the general public, and the few narrations that permit this practice align with their views.
✅ Let us pray more for the hastening of the reappearance (of the Imam):
