✅ Answer: 'Ihtilam' refers to becoming junub (ritually impure) and ejaculating while asleep, which generally (though not always) occurs from having a lustful dream.

✅ Ihtilam is not exclusive to men; women can experience it as well.

✅ Pay attention to the following narrations:

1⃣حَدَّثَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْأَقْرَعِ قَالَ: کَتَبْتُ إِلَی أَبِی مُحَمَّدٍ علیه السلام أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْإِمَامِ هَلْ یَحْتَلِمُ وَ قُلْتُ فِی نَفْسِی بَعْدَ مَا فُصِلَ الْکِتَابُ الِاحْتِلَامُ شَیْطَنَةٌ وَ قَدْ أَعَاذَ اللَّهُ أَوْلِیَاءَهُ مِنْ ذَلِکَ فَرَدَّ الْجَوَابَ الْأَئِمَّةُ حَالُهُمْ فِی الْمَنَامِ حَالُهُمْ فِی الْیَقَظَةِ لَا یُغَیِّرُ النَّوْمُ مِنْهُمْ شَیْئاً قَدْ أَعَاذَ اللَّهُ أَوْلِیَاءَهُ مِنْ لَمَّةِ الشَّیْطَانِ کَمَا حَدَّثَتْکَ نَفْسُکَ

Muhammad bin Aqra narrated: I wrote a letter to Imam Hasan al-Askari (peace be upon him) and asked him about whether an Imam experiences nocturnal emissions. After elaborating and finishing the letter, I thought to myself: Ihtilam is from Satan, and Allah has protected His friends from it!

The Imam replied: The state of the Imams in sleep is the same as their state when awake, and sleep does not change anything for them. Allah has protected His friends from satanic whisperings and influences, just as it came to your mind!

2⃣وَ رَوَی مُعَاوِیَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ علیه السلام قَالَ إِذَا خِفْتَ الْجَنَابَةَ فَقُلْ فِی فِرَاشِکَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّی أَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ الِاحْتِلَامِ وَ مِنْ سُوءِ الْأَحْلَامِ وَ مِنْ أَنْ یَتَلَاعَبَ بِیَ الشَّیْطَانُ فِی الْیَقَظَةِ وَ الْمَنَامِ

📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 1, p. 471

Muawiya bin Ammar narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said: When you fear becoming junub, say this in your bed and bedding:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّی أَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ الِاحْتِلَامِ وَ مِنْ سُوءِ الْأَحْلَامِ وَ مِنْ أَنْ یَتَلَاعَبَ بِیَ الشَّیْطَانُ فِی الْیَقَظَةِ وَ الْمَنَامِ

Translation of the prayer: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from nocturnal emissions (i.e., becoming junub through satanic dreams), from bad satanic dreams, and from Satan playing with me in wakefulness and sleep!

✅ This prayer, with slight variations, is narrated in Al-Kafi as follows:

3⃣عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَیْمُونٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: کَانَ أَمِیرُ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ یَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّی أَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ الِاحْتِلَامِ وَ مِنْ سُوءِ الْأَحْلَامِ وَ أَنْ یَلْعَبَ بِیَ الشَّیْطَانُ فِی الْیَقَظَةِ وَ الْمَنَامِ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Amir al-Mu'mineen (peace be upon him) used to say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّی أَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ الِاحْتِلَامِ وَ مِنْ سُوءِ الْأَحْلَامِ وَ أَنْ یَلْعَبَ بِیَ الشَّیْطَانُ فِی الْیَقَظَةِ وَ الْمَنَامِ.

✅ From the above narrations, it is clear that nocturnal emissions and becoming junub in sleep, accompanied by dreams, are generally from Satan and occur through Satan playing with a person during sleep. Those who fear this or are afflicted by it should recite the above prayer and seek refuge in Allah from Satan.

✅ By reciting the above prayer before sleeping at night or during the day, insha'Allah, satanic nocturnal emissions will be prevented.

✅ Based on reports of the conditions of some individuals, there are those who, unusually, experience lustful dreams and nocturnal emissions every night or every other night. This could be due to being possessed by jinn or afflicted by rebellious jinn. These individuals should always recite this prayer when going to sleep at night or during the day and perform actions and prayers to repel jinn, some of which are mentioned in the following link:
