Question 1821: The doctor has prescribed complete bed rest for a week to improve my herniated disc, and said I should lie down continuously and only sit up to use the restroom.
Additionally, sometimes my back pain increases when I pray.
Can I pray sitting during this period?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a narration: There is nothing that Allah has forbidden, except that He has made it permissible for one who is compelled and forced by necessity!
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 3, p. 177
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man and a woman who lose their eyesight, and physicians come to them and say that they need to be treated by lying on their backs for a month or 40 nights, and they pray in that position. The Imam permitted this and recited the end of verse 173 of Surah Al-Baqarah: 'But if one is forced by necessity without willful disobedience nor transgressing due limits, then there is no sin on him.'
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 410
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 463
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Nine things are lifted from my nation: error, forgetfulness, what they do not know, what they cannot bear, what they are compelled to do, bad omens, thoughts about creation, and envy as long as it is not expressed in words or actions!
📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 1, p. 362
He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: A sick person prays standing, if he cannot, then sitting, if he cannot, then lying on his right side, if he cannot, then lying on his left side, if he cannot, then lying on his back, and he points for bowing and prostration, turning his face towards the Qibla, and making his prostration lower than his bowing!
✅ According to the principles mentioned in the above narrations and others, although a person is obliged to perform their prayer with standing, bowing, and prostration completely, in a state of necessity and compulsion, there is allowance to omit what one is compelled by necessity to omit.
✅ Regarding the question above, where the individual must have complete bed rest to treat a herniated disc, due to necessity, they are permitted to perform their prayer in a manner that does not disrupt their treatment process, and according to their ability and medical guidelines, they should observe the priorities mentioned in narration 4⃣ and others.
