Question 1797: If someone is offered to travel for Hajj as a caravan servant without payment and they are capable of performing this service, does Hajj become obligatory upon them?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narration:
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 194
Abu Basir said: I asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, about the divine statement (in Surah Al-Imran, verse 97) that says, 'And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for those who are able to undertake the journey to it.' Imam replied: If someone does not have the means (for travel expenses), they should go on foot! I said: They cannot walk! Imam said: They should walk part of the way and ride part of the way! I said: They cannot do that either! Imam said: They should serve and work as a servant for the caravan and go with them to Hajj!
✅ This narration is also mentioned by Sheikh Tusi in 📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 10 and 📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 459.
✅ Based on the above narration, if someone does not have the funds for the Hajj journey but has the ability to go as a servant to the caravan, they are considered among those who are capable of performing Hajj and fall under the category of the verse 97 of Surah Al-Imran regarding the obligation of Hajj for those who are capable.
✅ There is no explicit contradiction to the above narration.
✅ The interpretation of some people as this narration being highly recommended (mustahabb) does not have a strong basis.
✅ Serving the Hajj caravan requires special strength and ability, which in this and other religious duties are considered conditions for the obligation to apply to the person, as mentioned in the following narrations:
📚 Al-Mahasin, p. 296
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Allah has not imposed any duty on people except what they have the ability to bear!
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 417
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, in a narration, said: Indeed, religion is not constrained, as Allah says in Surah Hajj, verse 78: 'He has not laid upon you in the religion any hardship.'
