Question 1781: What is the ruling on palmistry and consulting a palm reader?

✅ Answer: Palmistry is a form of fortune-telling where individuals claim that by reading the lines on a person's palm, they can learn about their destiny, future, past, character, and even matters like the number of children and the person's lifespan!

✅ First, please consider the following narrations:

📚 Al-Khisal, vol. 1, p. 296

Nasr ibn Qabus said: I heard Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, say: The astrologer (one who claims to predict the future based on stars) is cursed, the diviner (one who claims to know the past, future, and hidden matters) is cursed, and the magician is cursed...

📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 4, p. 6

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, forbade going to the diviner and said: Whoever goes to the diviner and believes in what he says, he is disavowing what Allah has revealed to Muhammad, peace be upon him!

✍ Note: A ‘diviner’ refers to someone who informs about the past, future, hidden matters, and guides people about lost things, etc.

📚 Al-Khisal, vol. 1, p. 19

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever informs about the past, future, or hidden matters, or if this is done for him, he is disavowing the religion of Muhammad, peace be upon him...

📚 Mustadrak al-Wasa'il, vol. 13, p. 111

Amir al-Mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: Allah revealed to a prophet during his prophethood to tell his people that they had taken His obedience lightly and had disobeyed Him... until He said: And tell them that whoever predicts the future, informs about hidden matters, practices magic, or has magic done to him, is not from Me!

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, divination, fortune-telling, and informing about hidden matters, as well as going to a diviner, is not allowed. Even though fortune-tellers, soothsayers, and informers of hidden matters claim various methods for their predictions, the result of their actions is the same, whether they use astrology, call on jinn, or claim to predict a person’s fate, future, lifespan, number of children, and so on!

Therefore, practicing palmistry or consulting a palm reader is considered the same as consulting a diviner, and the ruling on it is outlined in the above hadiths.

✅ It is worth noting that some doctors claim to detect certain bodily illnesses from the shape, changes, and conditions of the palm, tongue, and other parts of the body. While the validity of this claim pertains to medical science and specialists in this field, diagnosing diseases based on visible bodily changes is not considered divination and does not fall under the hadiths mentioned above.
