Question 1777: What is the reason for reciting the Adhan (call to prayer) in the ear of a newborn?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever has a newborn child should recite the Adhan in its right ear and the Iqama (second call to prayer) in its left ear, as this act provides protection and immunity from the accursed Satan!

Abu Yahya Razi narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) who said: When a child is born to you, what do you do for them? I replied: I do not know what to do. The Imam said: Take a lentil-sized amount of galbanum (a plant resin), mix it with water, and drop two drops into the right nostril and one drop into the left nostril. Then recite the Adhan in their right ear and the Iqama in their left ear. Do this before cutting the umbilical cord, as this will protect the child from fear, panic, and sudden awakenings, and they will not be affected by the illness called 'Um al-Sibyan.'
✅ 'Um al-Sibyan' refers to a condition caused by wind or spirits affecting children.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Command the midwife or anyone assisting with the birth to recite the Adhan in the right ear of the newborn so that 'Lammam' (a form of madness) and 'Tabi’ah' (a spirit that follows a person everywhere) will not affect the child!
✅ Some of the significant benefits and virtues of reciting the Adhan in the right ear and the Iqama in the left ear of a newborn have been explained in the above narrations. Unfortunately, these practices are often neglected in the Shia community today, where newborns are immediately taken for the administration of highly questionable birth vaccines, and such narrations are almost entirely overlooked.
✅ The above narrations pertain to the time of birth, but there is also a tradition of reciting the Adhan in the right ear and the Iqama in the left ear on the seventh day after birth. You can find some narrations regarding this in the following links:
