Question 160: Considering the economic and educational challenges of our time, is it better to seek offspring or avoid having children?
✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 3
Translation: Bakr ibn Salih says, "I wrote a letter to Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) stating that for five years, I have been avoiding seeking offspring (having children). The reason is that my wife does not like it, and she says, 'Raising and educating them is difficult for me because of my poor health. What is your opinion?' The Imam wrote to me: 'Seek offspring, for indeed, Allah, the Almighty, provides for them.'"
📚 Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 2
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said, 'Bring forth many offspring, for on the Day of Judgment, I will boast about your abundance over other nations.'"
📚 Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 383
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said, 'Get married, for on the Day of Judgment, I will boast about your abundance over other nations to the extent that a miscarried child will stand at the gate of Paradise in anger. He will be told, 'Enter Paradise,' but he will say, 'No, I will not enter until my parents enter before me.'"
✅ Numerous narrations emphasize the virtue of having children, as reported by Shia sources. It is not specific to any particular time, and against these valid Shia narrations, some unreliable narrations opposing marriage and having children have been mentioned in non-Shia books. These unreliable narrations are not credible and should not be acted upon.
✅ It is fitting for all believers, in fulfilling the desire of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them), to set aside all excuses, justifications, and comfort-seeking in accelerating marriage and striving for a large family. All lovers of the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them) are encouraged to support and assist others in this regard.
✅ It is strongly recommended that believers learn the etiquettes and supplications mentioned in authentic narrations regarding seeking offspring and diligently act upon them, as the importance of some of them pertains to the nature of the child, whether a friend or an enemy of the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them), or whether the child is sane or insane, and so forth.
✅ It is well-known that followers of certain groups take pride in their increasing population and surpassing the lovers of the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them). It is not appropriate for us to leave the noblest of creatures, who is superior over all nations, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), empty-handed due to excuses, justifications, and comfort-seeking.
✅ Once again, I strongly recommend learning the etiquettes, the appropriate times, and precise implementation of the narrations.
✅ Sharing this message and its content among the lovers of the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them) will serve as encouragement and a reminder. By doing so, we aim to actively participate in the teaching of these etiquettes.
