Question 1758: Recently, it has become common to place the deceased inside a large nylon bag before shrouding. Does this practice have religious approval?
✅ Answer: Consider the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahzib, Vol. 1, p. 291
Imam Sadiq or Imam Baqir, peace be upon them, said: The obligatory shroud for men consists of three pieces of cloth, namely a shirt with no buttons, a loincloth (lungi), and a piece of cloth that is wrapped around the middle of the body. Additionally, a full-length cloak is wrapped around him, and an extra piece is thrown over his chest.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 145
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The deceased is wrapped in five pieces of cloth: a shirt without buttons, a loincloth that is tied around the middle of his body, a piece of cloth that is fastened around the waist, a full-length cloak in which he is wrapped, and a turban that is tied on him. The surplus of the turban is thrown over his chest.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 147
One of the companions said: I asked Imam Sadiq, 'How is a woman shrouded?' He replied: Like a man, except that we attach a single piece of cloth to her chest, which is stuck to her breast, and we tie it around her waist.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 144
Zurarah said: I asked Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, whether the turban is part of the shroud. The Imam replied: No, the obligatory shroud consists of three pieces of cloth. One of them is a complete and comprehensive piece of cloth covering the entire body. The more it exceeds these three, the more it is considered innovation, and the turban is part of the tradition.
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 92
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The deceased, other than the turban, is shrouded in three pieces of cloth. The loincloth (a piece of cloth with a width of one and a half times the span and a length of about two meters) is tightly tied around the upper thighs of the deceased so that nothing of him is exposed. The turban and loincloth must be present, although they are not part of the obligatory shroud.
📚 Al-Tahzib, Vol. 3, p. 177
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: If a woman dies during her postpartum period, and her bleeding is excessive, a piece of leather resembling a leather bag is placed inside. She is cleaned, her navel is placed in the bag, her private parts and anus are filled with cotton, and then she is shrouded!
📚 Al-Tahzib, Vol. 1, p. 92
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said in a hadith: Anything that Allah has made forbidden is not permissible unless He has made it permissible for someone who is compelled and has no choice!
✅ Based on the above narrations and those mentioned here, the sections of the shroud for men and women are limited and specified. Anything beyond that is considered an innovation. In normal circumstances, the deceased should not be placed in nylon without direction and then shrouded.
✅ However, in cases of necessity or severe bleeding, it is permissible to place the deceased in a leather bag or something similar, such as nylon, and then shroud.
