Question 219: According to the tradition, how many pieces is a burial shroud (kafan)?
✅ Answer:
📚 Tahzib, Vol. 1, p. 291
Translation: Imam Sadiq or Imam Baqir (peace be upon them) said: The obligatory shroud for men consists of three pieces, and it is a tradition to use a turban (amamah) and a cloth (khirqa). However, the obligatory shroud for women consists of five pieces.
📚 Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 145
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The deceased is shrouded in five pieces: a shirt without buttons, a lower garment (izar), a cloth (khirqa) tied around the body, a wrap (burd or sar-ta'siri) in which the body is wrapped, and a turban (amamah) tied over it, with its extra part thrown over the chest.
✅ According to the above two narrations, the burial shroud consists of five pieces:
1. Khirqa (cloth): Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) mentioned that the khirqa should be long enough to tightly wrap around the thighs from above the buttocks to the knees.
📚 Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 142
2. Qamees or shirt:
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) mentioned that the shroud is a shirt without buttons and without additional embroidery.
📚 Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 145
📚 Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 153
Someone asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): A man has died; can he be shrouded in three pieces without a shirt? He replied: It is not a problem, but a shirt is more preferable to me.
📚 Tahzib, Vol. 1, p. 293
Sahl asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): Can the clothes in which a person prays and fasts be used as his shroud? The Imam replied: I like such a shroud, meaning it should be used as a shirt.
✅ Therefore, instead of a shirt, a single piece of cloth can be used, or during shrouding, a single piece of cloth can be wrapped like a shirt, without sewing or adding buttons. Alternatively, clothes in which a person has prayed and fasted can be used, and after unbuttoning them, they can be placed over the deceased for shrouding.
3. Izar or lower garment: Also known as lang (loincloth). Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) mentioned in Tahzib (Vol. 1, p. 305) that the izar should cover the chest and legs.
4. Amamah or turban: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) mentioned that it is taken in the middle, wrapped around the head of the deceased, and the excess is thrown over the chest.
📚 Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 143
✅ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) also stated that women's shroud, in addition to the above four items, includes an extra piece:
For women, instead of a turban (amamah), a cloth similar to a headscarf that covers her head and neck is used.
5. Burd or sirtasiri is a shroud that covers the entire body and is worn over the deceased's shrouds. In essence, the deceased is wrapped in it.
✅ In addition to the above four items, the burial shroud for women has an additional piece:
📚 Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 147
One of the companions said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): How is a woman shrouded? He replied: Like a man, except that we attach a piece of cloth to her breasts and tie it around her chest.
✅ Based on these narrations, the necessary pieces for the shroud are, in practice:
1. A piece of cloth with a width of one and a half vori (a unit of measure) and a length of about two meters or more, which should be tightly wrapped around the thighs from above the buttocks to the knees.
2. A shirt (or a single piece of cloth with a minimum width of one and a half meters and a length of about one meter and sixty centimeters).
3. A lang (loincloth) with a minimum width of one and a half meters and a length of about one meter and sixty centimeters.
4. A turban (amamah) with a length of about two meters and thirty centimeters and a minimum width of one and a half meters.
5. For women, in addition to the above, a piece of cloth for tying around the chest, with a width of about one vori and a length of about one meter and twenty centimeters.
