1⃣عَنْ عَلِیٍّ فِی حَدِیثِ قَالَ: إِذَا أَرَادَ أَحَدُکُمْ النَوم فَلْیَضَعْ یَدَهُ الْیُمْنَی تَحْتَ خَدِّهِ الْأَیْمَنِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا یَدْرِی أَ یَنْتَبِهُ مِنْ رَقْدَتِهِ أَمْ لَا

📚 Al-Khisal, p. 636

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: When one of you intends to sleep, he should place his right hand under his right cheek because he does not know whether he will wake up from his sleep or not!

2⃣عن جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ فِی وَصِیَّةِ النَّبِیِّ لِعَلِیٍّ قَالَ: یَا عَلِیُّ النَّوْمُ أَرْبَعَةٌ نَوْمُ الْأَنْبِیَاءِ عَلَی أَقْفِیَتِهِمْ وَ نَوْمُ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ عَلَی أَیْمَانِهِمْ وَ نَوْمُ الْکُفَّارِ وَ الْمُنَافِقِینَ عَلَی یَسَارِهِمْ وَ نَوْمُ الشَّیَاطِینِ عَلَی وُجُوهِهِم

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his father, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) advised Imam Ali (peace be upon him), saying: "O Ali! There are four types of sleep: the prophets sleep on their backs while their eyes do not sleep, awaiting Allah's revelation. Believers sleep on their right side. Disbelievers and hypocrites sleep on their left side. And the devils sleep on their faces!"

3⃣عَبْداللَّهِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الطَّائِیِّ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنِ الرِّضَا عَنْ آبَائِهِ فِی حَدِیثٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ عَلِیّاً عَنِ النَّوْمِ عَلَی کَمْ وَجْهٍ هُوَ قَالَ النَّوْمُ عَلَی أَرْبَعَةِ أَوْجُهٍ الْأَنْبِیَاءُ تَنَامُ عَلَی أَقْفِیَتِهِمْ مُسْتَلْقِینَ وَ أَعْیُنُهم لَا تَنَامُ مُتَوَقِّعَةً لِوَحْیِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوَجَلَّ وَ الْمُؤْمِنُ یَنَامُ عَلَی یَمِینِهِ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ وَ الْمُلُوکُ وَ أَبْنَاؤُهَا تَنَامُ عَلَی شَمَائِلِهِمْ لِیَسْتَمْرِءُوا مَا یَأْکُلُونَ وَ إِبْلِیسُ مَعَ إِخْوَانِهِ وَ کُلُّ مَجْنُونٍ وَ ذُو عَاهَةٍ یَنَامُ عَلَی وَجْهِهِ مُنْبَطِحاً

Imam al-Ridha (peace be upon him) narrated from his father about sleeping and said: "A man asked Imam Ali (peace be upon him) about sleeping, and in how many ways it can be done. Imam Ali replied: Sleep has four ways:

1. Prophets sleep on their backs while their eyes do not sleep, waiting for the revelation of Allah (mighty and majestic be He).

2. A believer sleeps on his right side, facing the qibla.

3. Kings and their sons sleep on their left side so that what they eat becomes easy to digest.

4. Satan, along with his brothers and every insane and diseased person, sleeps on his face (upside down)!"

4⃣عن الحسن بْنِ علي الْعَلَوِيِّ يقول سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوسَى الرِّضَا يَقُولُ: لَنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ عِنْدَ نَوْمِنَا عَشْرُ خِصَالٍ الطَّهَارَةُ و تَوَسُّدُ الْيَمِينِ وَ تَسْبِيحُ اللَّهِ ثَلَاثاً و ثَلَاثِينَ و تَحْمِيدُهُ ثَلَاثاً و ثَلَاثِينَ وَ تَكْبِيرُهُ أَرْبَعاً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ وَ نَسْتَقْبِلُ الْقِبْلَةَ بِوُجُوهِنَا وَ نَقْرَأُ فَاتِحَةَ الْكِتَابِ وَ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَ شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ إِلَى آخِرِهَا فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ أَخَذَ بِحَظِّهِ فِي لَيْلَتِه

📚 Mustadrak, Vol. 5, p. 116

Hasan ibn Ali al-Alawi said: I heard Imam Ali al-Naqi (peace be upon him) say: "We, the Ahl al-Bayt, perform ten actions when going to sleep:

Performing ablution, Sleeping on the right side, Saying "Subhan Allah" 33 times, "Alhamdulillah" 33 times, and "Allahu Akbar" 34 times, Facing the qibla, Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha and Ayat al-Kursi, Reciting the verse "Shahida Allahu annahu la ilaha illa huwa" (Quran 3:18), Whoever does these things at the time of sleep will benefit from his night!"

5⃣ Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in Hadith 400 of Nahj al-Balagha said: When one of you intends to sleep, he should place his right hand under his right cheek and say:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِی لِلَّهِ عَلَی مِلَّةِ إِبْرَاهِیمَ وَ دِینِ مُحَمَّدٍ صلی الله علیه و آله وَ وَلَایَةِ مَنِ افْتَرَضَ اللَّهُ طَاعَتَهُ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ کَانَ وَ مَا لَمْ یَشَأْ لَمْ یَکُنْ

"So whoever says these words when going to sleep will be protected from theft, looting, and the destruction of buildings, and the angels will seek forgiveness for him."

✅ According to the above narrations and others, the recommended way of sleeping is that a believer sleeps on his right side, placing his right hand under his right cheek, similar to placing a deceased person in a grave with his face towards the qibla.

✅ The direction of the feet towards the qibla is for the state of dying and washing the deceased and is different from the sleeping position.
