Question 16: Is it necessary to recite a prayer from the Ahl al-Bayt for a particular matter, or can we prepare our own words for prayer?

✅ Answer:

📚 Mustadrak al-Wasa'il, Volume 5, Page 264

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, prayer repels calamity while it is firmly tied. And Sha' says: I asked Abdullah ibn Sinan: Is there a specific and limited prayer for this? He said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about this matter, and he replied: As for the prayers of the weak Shia (i.e., those with little knowledge and insight), in any hardship or affliction, the prayer is specific and limited (meaning they must recite the prescribed prayers). But the prayers of insightful and mature Shia are not blocked (they are accepted).

Explanation: Addressing the Lord with His names and attributes and asking from Him correctly requires knowledge and insight, so that one does not address Allah inappropriately. Therefore, it is necessary for us to recite prayers prescribed by the Ahl al-Bayt to avoid making mistakes. However, the mature and insightful Shia, with their knowledge and awareness, can address Allah and make correct requests, and their prayers will rise.

As narrated in 📚 Al-Kafi, Volume 1, Page 107, a person reported: I wrote to Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) in a prayer: 'Praise be to Allah, the extent of His knowledge.' Then the Imam wrote back to me: Never say, 'the extent of His knowledge,' because Allah's knowledge is infinite. Rather, say: 'the extent of His pleasure.'

It is seen that the narrator, due to a lack of insight and sufficient knowledge, made an incorrect address to Allah.

Therefore, we should, if possible, recite the prayers prescribed by the Ahl al-Bayt, as in the books of narrations, especially in the Sahifa Sajjadiya, where we can find excellent prayers for all matters, both general and specific, that we can use in all causes.

Insha'Allah
