Question 1266: According to a narration that the Ahlul Bayt (AS) are sorrowful during joyous occasions, should we also be sorrowful on the day of Ghadeer?

Etiquettes of expressing joy

✅Answer: Consider the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4

Imam Baqir (AS) said to Abdullah bin Dinar: 'O Abdullah! There is no Eid for the Muslims like the Eid of sacrifice, not the Eid al-Fitr, unless it freshens the grief for the family of Muhammad (AS)! I asked: Why? He replied: Because they see their right in the hands of others!'

📚 Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 97, p. 112

📚 Misbah al-Mutahajjid, p. 524

Imam Reza (AS) said in a narration about the actions of Ghadeer: 'In one of the years of Amir al-Mu'minin (AS), Eid al-Ghadeer and Friday coincided. Amir al-Mu'minin (AS) spent five hours of that day on the pulpit, praising and thanking Allah in a way unheard of... to the extent that Amir al-Mu'minin (AS) said about the actions of the day of Ghadeer: 'Show joy and happiness on your faces openly among yourselves and manifest joy and happiness in your meetings.'

Book of Aqbal, p. 474

Imam Sadiq (AS) said about the actions of Eid al-Ghadeer: 'Then eat and drink, express joy and happiness, feed your brothers, do good to them abundantly, fulfill the needs of your brothers, for the respect and honor of this day and opposition to those who express grief and sorrow on this day, may Allah multiply their grief and sorrow!'

📚 Iqbal al-A'mal, p. 884

Imam Reza (AS) said: 'When the Day of Judgment comes, four days are sent to Allah as a bride is sent to her husband, as the bride is sent to her bridegroom! It was said: What are these days?! He said: The Day of Sacrifice, the Day of Fitr, Friday, and the Day of Ghadeer! And indeed, the Day of Ghadeer, among the days of Sacrifice, Fitr, and Friday, is like the moon among the stars... until he said... and that day (meaning the Day of Ghadeer) is the day of smiling faces among the people of faith! So whoever smiles at his brother on the Day of Ghadeer, Allah will look at him with mercy on the Day of Judgment, fulfill a thousand of his needs, and build for him a palace in paradise made of white pearls, and his face will shine!'

✅ It can be observed that in narration 1⃣, during the Muslim festivals, the Ahlul Bayt (AS) become sorrowful as they see their right in the hands of others. However, Imam Ali (AS) specifically mentions the names of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in this context. Yet, according to narrations 2⃣, 3⃣, 4⃣, etc., regarding Eid al-Ghadeer, we are obliged to express joy, happiness, and smiles among the people of faith, even though the grief of the absence and occultation of Imam Mahdi (AS) resides in the hearts of believers.

Therefore, on the day of Eid al-Ghadeer, we cannot be visibly sorrowful due to the sorrow of the Ahlul Bayt (AS) during the festivals of the Muslims. We must outwardly show joy and happiness in our gatherings and, in the presence of fellow believers, exhibit smiles.
