Question 49: What is the ruling and instruction from the Infallible Imams about sacrificing an animal on behalf of non-pilgrims in other cities?

1⃣ و روی عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْفُضَیْلِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَهُ عَنِ الْأَضْحَی فَقَالَ هُوَ وَاجِبٌ عَلَی کُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ إِلَّا مَنْ لَمْ یَجِدْ فَقَالَ لَهُ السَّائِلُ فَمَا تَرَی فِی الْعِیَالِ فَقَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ فَعَلْتَ وَ إِنْ شِئْتَ لَمْ تَفْعَلْ فَأَمَّا أَنْتَ فَلَا تَدَعْهُ
Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 488
A man asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about sacrificing an animal. The Imam said: This act is obligatory upon every Muslim except for those who are financially unable.
The person asked: What about one's family (wife and children)? (Should I sacrifice on their behalf as well?)
The Imam said: If you wish, do so, and if you wish, do not. However, do not neglect it for yourself.

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: The sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is obligatory upon whoever has the financial ability, whether it is small or large, and it is a Sunnah!
2⃣عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: الْأُضْحِیَّةُ وَاجِبَةٌ عَلَی مَنْ وَجَدَ مِنْ صَغِیرٍ أَوْ کَبِیرٍ وَ هِیَ سُنَّةٌ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) was asked about the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha, whether it is obligatory for a person who has the financial ability for himself and his family. The Imam said: As for himself, he should not neglect it, but for his family, if he wishes, he may neglect it!
3⃣عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: سُئِلَ عَنِ الْأَضْحَی أَ وَاجِبٌ هُوَ عَلَی مَنْ وَجَدَ لِنَفْسِهِ وَ عِیَالِهِ فَقَالَ أَمَّا لِنَفْسِهِ فَلَا یَدَعُهُ وَ أَمَّا لِعِیَالِهِ إِنْ شَاءَ تَرَکَهُ.
