Question 1689: Is it obligatory to perform ablution (wudu) or ritual bath (ghusl) during the stoning of the Jamarat?
✅ Answer: Consider the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 482
Muhammad ibn Muslim says, "I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about stoning the Jamarat. The Imam said, 'Do not perform the stoning of the Jamarat except in a state of ritual purity (ghusl or wudu).'"
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 478
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a narration, "It is recommended to perform the stoning of the Jamarat while in a state of ritual purity."
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 482
Muhammad Halabi says, "I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about performing a ghusl when intending to stone the Jamarat. The Imam said, 'I sometimes perform ghusl, but it is not a tradition (sunnah).'"
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 198
Hamid ibn Mas'ud reports, "I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about stoning the Jamarat without being in a state of ritual purity (wudu or ghusl). The Imam said, 'The Jamarat, in our view, are like the walls of Safa and Marwah. If you perform Tawaf between them without ritual purity, it does not harm you. However, ritual purity is more beloved in our view. So, if you are capable, do not neglect it.'"
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 399
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said, "There is no problem with performing all the rituals of Hajj without wudu, except for Tawaf around the Kaaba, and it is better to be in a state of wudu for the other rituals."
✅ According to the above narrations and others, stoning the Jamarat without having ritual purity (ghusl or wudu) is permissible. However, it is recommended, better, and more beloved, according to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), that if a person has the capability, they should be in a state of wudu or ghusl during the stoning.
