1⃣عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَشْیِ مَعَ الْجَنَازَةِ فَقَالَ بَیْنَ یَدَیْهَا وَ عَنْ یَمِینِهَا وَ عَنْ شِمَالِهَا وَ خَلْفِهَا.

📚 Al-Kafi Vol. 3, Page 169

Muhammad bin Muslim said: I asked Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq, peace be upon them, about walking with a funeral procession. The Imam replied: In front of it, to its right, to its left, and behind it!

2⃣عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: امْشِ بَیْنَ یَدَیِ الْجَنَازَةِ وَ خَلْفَهَا.

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Walk in front of the funeral procession and behind it!

3⃣عَنِ السَّکُونِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: سُئِلَ کَیْفَ أَصْنَعُ إِذَا خَرَجْتُ مَعَ الْجَنَازَةِ أَمْشِی أَمَامَهَا أَوْ خَلْفَهَا أَوْ عَنْ یَمِینِهَا أَوْ عَنْ شِمَالِهَا فَقَالَ إِنْ کَانَ مُخَالِفاً فَلَا تَمْشِ أَمَامَهُ فَإِنَّ مَلَائِکَةَ الْعَذَابِ یَسْتَقْبِلُونَهُ بِأَلْوَانِ الْعَذَابِ.

Sukuni said: Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, was asked: When I walk with a funeral procession, what should I do? Should I walk in front of it, behind it, to its right, or to its left? The Imam replied: If the deceased is an opponent, do not walk in front of it, because the angels of punishment approach him with various torments!

4⃣عَنْ یُونُسَ بْنِ ظَبْیَانَ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: امْشِ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْمُسْلِمِ الْعَارِفِ وَ لَا تَمْشِ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْجَاحِدِ فَإِنَّ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْمُسْلِمِ مَلَائِکَةً یُسْرِعُونَ بِهِ إِلَی الْجَنَّةِ وَ إِنَّ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْکَافِرِ مَلَائِکَةً یُسْرِعُونَ بِهِ إِلَی النَّارِ.

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Walk in front of the funeral of a knowledgeable Muslim but do not walk in front of the funeral of obstinate individuals! Indeed, angels hasten a Muslim toward Paradise, while for a disbeliever, angels hasten him toward the Fire!

5⃣ عَنِ السِّنْدِیِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِی الْبَخْتَرِیِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ عَلِیٍّ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِذَا لَقِیتَ جَنَازَةَ مُشْرِکٍ فَلَا تَسْتَقْبِلْهَا خُذْ عَنْ یَمِینِهَا وَ عَنْ شِمَالِهَا.

📚 Qurb al-Isnad, Page 65

Imam Ali, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: When you encounter the funeral of a polytheist, do not walk in front of it; walk to its right or left instead!

✅ Based on the above and other narrations, during the funeral of a Shia, believer, or Muslim, one may walk in front of the procession, as well as to its right, left, or behind it. Since the angels of mercy come to hasten him toward Paradise, walking in front of his procession is not prohibited.

✅ However, during the funeral of opponents, polytheists, or obstinate individuals, it is prohibited to walk in front of the procession because the angels of punishment approach him to hasten him toward the Fire.

الْأَصْبَغِ بْنِ نُبَاتَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَمِیرَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ یَقُولُ عَلَی الْمِنْبَرِ یَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ الْفِقْهَ ثُمَّ الْمَتْجَرَ الْفِقْهَ ثُمَّ الْمَتْجَرَ الْفِقْهَ ثُمَّ الْمَتْجَرَ وَ اللَّهِ لَلرِّبَا فِی هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ أَخْفَی مِنْ دَبِیبِ النَّمْلِ عَلَی الصَّفَا شُوبُوا أَیْمَانَکُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ التَّاجِرُ فَاجِرٌ وَ الْفَاجِرُ فِی النَّارِ إِلَّا مَنْ أَخَذَ الْحَقَّ وَ أَعْطَی الْحَقَّ

Asbagh said: I heard Imam Ali, peace be upon him, say on the pulpit:

O group of merchants, first learn the jurisprudence (of trade) and then engage in commerce!

(He repeated this statement three times.)

By Allah, usury in this nation is subtler than the crawling of an ant on a stone. Mix your oaths with truthfulness. A dishonest merchant is in the Fire unless (he) takes and gives rights justly.
