Question 1666: Can Surah Al-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq be recited in obligatory or voluntary prayers? If permissible, is it considered disliked (makruh)?
✅ Answer: Consider the following narrations:

Safwan narrates: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) led us in Maghrib prayer, and in the two (initial) rak'ahs, he recited Surah Al-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq!

Saber narrates: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) led us in Maghrib prayer and recited Surah Al-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq. Then he said: These two surahs are part of the Quran!

Mansur ibn Hazim narrates: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) instructed me to recite Surah Al-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq in obligatory prayers!

Ya'qub ibn Yaqtin narrates: I asked Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) about recitation in the Witr prayer. I said: One narration mentions reciting Surah Al-Tawhid in all three rak'ahs, while another narrates reciting Surah Al-Nas and Al-Falaq and Surah Al-Tawhid in the third rak'ah. The Imam replied: Act according to the narration involving Surah Al-Nas, Surah Al-Falaq, and *Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad* (Surah Al-Tawhid).

Abu Bakr Al-Hadrami narrates: I told Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): Ibn Mas’ud used to exclude Surah Al-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq from the Quran! The Imam replied: My father said that Ibn Mas’ud did this based on his own opinion, but these two surahs are indeed part of the Quran!
✅ Based on the above and other narrations, Surah Al-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq, referred to as the *Mu'awwidhatayn*, are undoubtedly part of the Quran. Contrary to some historical views of certain Sunni scholars, particularly in the past, and a rare narration in *Fiqh Al-Ridha* that considers them merely protective prayers (*ta'weez*) and disallows their recitation in obligatory prayers, it is clear that these surahs are valid Quranic chapters. Their recitation in obligatory and voluntary prayers is permissible, even recommended, and not disliked in any way.
