Question 1663: What is the ruling on using theological books by non-Shia scholars, such as Salafi and Hanbali scholars, for learning and refining one’s beliefs?
✅ Answer: While it is surprising for a Shia to pose such a question, consider the following narrations:
📚 Uyun Al-Akhbar, p. 225
Imam Reza (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) stated: 'I am the city of knowledge, and Ali (peace be upon him) is its gate.'
📚 Uyun Al-Akhbar, p. 230
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: 'I am the treasure of knowledge, and Ali is its key. Whoever seeks the treasure must come to the key (i.e., Ali, peace be upon him)!'
📚 Nahj al-Balagha, Vol. 1, p. 278
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: 'We are the close kin, chosen ones, companions, guardians, and the gates. Houses are not entered except through their doors. Whoever enters through other than the gates is called a thief.'
📚 Amali Ibn Sheikh, p. 19
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) told me: “I am the city of knowledge, and you are its gate. Whoever claims to have entered the city through other than the gate is lying!”'
📚 Rijal al-Kashshi, Vol. 1, p. 3, Hadith 4
Ali bin Suwayd Sa’i narrates: Imam Musa al-Kadhim (peace be upon him), while in prison, wrote to me: 'As for what you mentioned, O Ali, about from whom to take the teachings and rulings of your religion, know that the teachings and rulings of your religion must not be taken from anyone other than our Shia. If you go beyond them, you have taken your religion and beliefs from those who have betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and His trusts.'
📚 Mustatrafat al-Sara’ir, p. 41, Hadith 8
Harun bin Kharijah narrates: 'We would go to these opponents (non-Shia) and listen to their narrations to use them as proof against them.'
The Imam said: 'Do not go to them, nor listen to them. May Allah curse them, their communities, and their misguided religious paths!'
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, the teachings and rulings of the religion must be taken exclusively from the infallibles (peace be upon them) and through the Shia. It is not permissible to take the teachings of religion from non-Shia sources.
