Question 1631: What is the tradition regarding the length of hair above the upper lip?

✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 487

Ali ibn Ja'far said: I asked Imam Kazim, peace be upon him, about trimming the mustache, whether it is a tradition. He replied: Yes.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 487

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: It is a tradition to trim the mustache short until it reaches the line between the growing of hair and the upper lip.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 487

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: None of you should ever raise his mustache high because Satan places his hiding place there to conceal himself!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 487

Someone said: We mentioned trimming the mustache, so Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: This action brings joy and freedom (from sorrow and distress)!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 487

Abdullah saw Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, trim the hair of his mustache until it reached the root of the mustache, then he attached it to the root of the mustache!

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 130

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: The Majoos (Zoroastrians) plucked their beard hair and made their mustaches long and bushy, but we trim our mustaches and let our beard hair grow long and bushy. That is the natural way.

📚 Ma'ani al-Akhbar, Vol. 1, p. 291

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: Trim the mustaches and let the beard hair grow long and bushy. Do not resemble the Majoos!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 1, p. 346

Habbah and Al-Bayhah say: I saw Imam Ali, peace be upon him, in the forces of al-Khamees (special forces of Imam Ali, peace be upon him), carrying a quiver with two ends. He used it to strike the sellers of locusts, snakes, and fish (which are three kinds of fish without scales and are prohibited). He would say to them: O sellers of the disfigured ones from the Children of Israel and the army of Bani Marwan! Farat ibn Ahnaf approached him and said: O Commander of the Faithful, who were the army of Bani Marwan? Imam Ali, peace be upon him, replied: They were a people who shaved their beards and let their mustaches grow long and bushy, and as a result, they became disfigured.

✅ In the book 📚Musbah al-Muneer p. 308 and the book 📚Majma' al-Bahrain Vol. 2 p. 78, and many other lexicons, the meaning of mustache is mentioned as follows:

Meaning: Mustache refers to the hair that hangs over the mouth and upper lip.

Based on these narrations, raising the hair above the upper lip that hangs over the mouth is discouraged, especially on Fridays. It is recommended to trim these hairs to the extent that the upper lip line is reached.

✅ Complete shaving of all the hairs above the upper lip, as is the common practice today, is not explicitly mentioned in Shia narrations. To follow Shia traditions, it is sufficient to trim the hanging hairs on the mouth and upper lip so that the upper lip line is completely free of hair, or the hairs above the upper lip are shortened to achieve this.
