📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 1, p. 545
Sama’ah says: I asked Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about Khums; the Imam said: It applies to everything that people earn or acquire, whether little or much!
2 Ali ibn Mahziyar says: Abu Ja’far wrote to me, and I read his letter on the way to Mecca, where he said: ... As for spoils and profits, they are obligatory upon them every year. Allah the Exalted says (in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 41): ‘And know that whatever you take as spoils, one-fifth of it is for Allah, the Messenger, his near relatives, the orphans, the needy, and the traveler, if you believe in Allah and what We revealed to Our servant on the Day of Criterion, the day when the two armies met. And Allah is capable of all things.’

Spoils and profits (subject to Khums) are the earnings a person gains, the benefits they obtain, valuable gifts or awards given from one person to another, and inheritance that comes unexpectedly from someone other than a parent or child...

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: For every person who earns or acquires something, it is obligatory to pay the Khums of what they have gained to Lady Fatima (peace be upon her) and those from her progeny who are successors to her authority and proofs for the people. This is exclusively for them, and they may distribute it as they wish!

One of the companions wrote to Imam Jawad (peace be upon him): Inform me about Khums, whether it applies to everything a person earns or acquires, little or much, including craftsmen, and how it is applied? Another man said to him: He is not asking you to permit highway robbery; he is asking about a servant he buys, a woman he marries, an inheritance he receives, trade, or something given to him. The Imam said: This is permissible for our Shia, those present and absent, the living and the dead, and those born from them until the Day of Judgment; it is permissible for them...

✅ Inheritance is one of the spoils and profits that, according to narration 5 and others, the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) have made permissible for their Shia to use. A Shia individual, after receiving inheritance, may spend it on necessities such as daily expenses, Hajj, Umrah, Ziyarat, purchasing a necessary home, marrying their children, paying off debts, buying a means of transport, and similar expenses. However, since inheritance is among the spoils and profits a person acquires, if it exceeds their annual living expenses, they must pay Khums on the surplus, and the remainder is permissible for them.
