Question 1592: If a person forgets or intentionally neglects to wash the place of urination or defecation and then performs ablution (wudu) and prays, what is his duty?

1 عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ یَقْطِینٍ عَنْ أَبِی الْحَسَنِ فِی الرَّجُلِ یَبُولُ فَیَنْسَی غَسْلَ ذَکَرِهِ ثُمَّ یَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَ الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ یَغْسِلُ ذَکَرَهُ وَ لَا یُعِیدُ الْوُضُوءَ.

Imam Kazim, peace be upon him, said about a person who urinates and forgets to wash his private part and then performs ablution for prayer: He washes his private part and does not repeat the ablution!
2 عَنِ ابْنِ بُکَیْرٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فِی الرَّجُلِ یَبُولُ وَ یَنْسَی أَنْ یَغْسِلَ ذَکَرَهُ حَتَّی یَتَوَضَّأَ وَ یُصَلِّیَ قَالَ یَغْسِلُ ذَکَرَهُ وَ یُعِیدُ الصَّلَاةَ وَ لَا یُعِیدُ الْوُضُوءَ.

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said about a person who urinates and forgets to wash his private part until he performs ablution and prays: He washes his private part and repeats the prayer and does not repeat the ablution!
3 عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ یَحْیَی قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِی نَصْرٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَبُولُ وَ أَتَوَضَّأُ وَ أَنْسَی اسْتِنْجَائِی ثُمَّ أَذْکُرُ بَعْدَ مَا صَلَّیْتُ قَالَ اغْسِلْ ذَکَرَکَ وَ أَعِدْ صَلَاتَکَ وَ لَا تُعِدْ وُضُوءَکَ.

Amr said: I said to Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him: I urinate and perform ablution and forget to wash the place of urination, and then I remember after I have prayed; The Imam said: Wash your private part and repeat your prayer and do not repeat your ablution!
4 عَنِ ابْنِ أُذَیْنَةَ قَالَ: ذَکَرَ أَبُو مَرْیَمَ الْأَنْصَارِیُّ أَنَّ الْحَکَمَ بْنَ عُتَیْبَةَ بَالَ یَوْماً وَ لَمْ یَغْسِلْ ذَکَرَهُ مُتَعَمِّداً فَذَکَرْتُ ذَلِکَ لِأَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ بِئْسَ مَا صَنَعَ عَلَیْهِ أَنْ یَغْسِلَ ذَکَرَهُ وَ یُعِیدَ صَلَاتَهُ وَ لَا یُعِیدُ وُضُوءَهُ.

Ibn Udhaynah said: Abu Maryam Al-Ansari mentioned that Hakam ibn Utaybah once urinated and intentionally did not wash his private part. I mentioned this matter to Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him; The Imam said: He has done a bad thing! It is his duty to wash his private part and repeat his prayer and he does not repeat his ablution!
5 عَنِ ابْنِ أُذَیْنَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ : تَوَضَّأْتُ یَوْماً وَ لَمْ أَغْسِلْ ذَکَرِی ثُمَّ صَلَّیْتُ فَسَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْ ذَکَرَکَ وَ أَعِدْ صَلَاتَکَ.

Zurarah said: I once performed ablution and did not wash my private part. So I asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him; The Imam said: Wash your private part and repeat your prayer!
6 عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّه إِذَا دَخَلْتَ الْغَائِطَ فَقَضَیْتَ الْحَاجَةَ فَلَمْ تُهَرِقِ الْمَاءَ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأْتَ وَ نَسِیتَ أَنْ تَسْتَنْجِیَ فَذَکَرْتَ بَعْدَ مَا صَلَّیْتَ فَعَلَیْکَ الْإِعَادَةُ...

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: In case you enter the toilet and defecate and do not urinate and then perform ablution and forget to wash the place of defecation, it is your duty to repeat (the prayer)...
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, if a person, after urinating or defecating, intentionally or out of forgetfulness, neglects to purify the place of urination or defecation and then performs ablution and prays, he is obligated to repeat his prayer but does not repeat his ablution.
