Question 1581: What is the ruling for someone who, despite being able, deliberately postpones their Hajj for the sake of trade, extra worldly needs, or other things?

1 عَنِ الْحَلَبِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْداللَّهِ قَالَ: إِذَا قَدَرَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَی مَا یَحُجُّ بِهِ ثُمَّ دَفَعَ ذَلِکَ وَ لَیْسَ لَهُ شُغُلٌ یَعْذِرُهُ بِهِ فَقَدْ تَرَکَ شَرِیعَةً مِنْ شَرَائِعِ الْإِسْلَامِ الْحَدِیثَ.

📚 Al-Tahdhib Vol. 5, p. 403

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'If a person is capable of performing Hajj and then delays it while having no valid excuse, he has certainly abandoned a fundamental pillar of Islam!'

2 عَنْ أَبِی الصَّبَّاحِ الْکِنَانِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْداللَّهِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ أَرَأَیْتَ الرَّجُلَ التَّاجِرَ ذَا الْمَالِ حِینَ یُسَوِّفُ الْحَجَّ کُلَّ عَامٍ وَ لَیْسَ یَشْغَلُهُ عَنْهُ إِلَّا التِّجَارَةُ أَوِ الدَّیْنُ فَقَالَ لَا عُذْرَ لَهُ یُسَوِّفُ الْحَجَّ إِنْ مَاتَ وَ قَدْ تَرَکَ الْحَجَّ فَقَدْ تَرَکَ شَرِیعَةً مِنْ شَرَائِعِ الْإِسْلَامِ.

Abu Sabbah al-Kinani said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a wealthy merchant who postpones Hajj every year and nothing occupies him except for his trade and debts; the Imam said: 'He has no excuse to delay Hajj! If he dies having abandoned Hajj, he has certainly abandoned a fundamental pillar of Islam!'

3 عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفُضَیْلِ قال: سَأَلْتُ أَبَاالْحَسَنِ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوَجَلَّ وَ مَنْ کانَ فِی هذِهِ أَعْمی فَهُوَ فِی الْآخِرَةِ أَعْمی وَ أَضَلُّ سَبِیلًا فَقَالَ نَزَلَتْ فِیمَنْ سَوَّفَ الْحَجَّ حَجَّةَ الْإِسْلَامِ وَ عِنْدَهُ مَا یَحُجُّ بِهِ فَقَالَ الْعَامَ أَحُجُّ الْعَامَ أَحُجُّ حَتَّی یَمُوتَ قَبْلَ أَنْ یَحُجَّ.

Muhammad ibn Fadil said: 'I asked Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Exalted (in Surah Al-Isra, verse 72) which says: 'And whoever is blind in this (world), he will be blinder and more astray in the Hereafter;' the Imam said: 'It was revealed about those who, despite having the means to perform Hajj, postpone the obligatory Hajj. Every year he says: 'I will perform Hajj this year!' 'I will go for Hajj this year!' until he dies before performing it!'

4 عَنْ ذَرِیحٍ الْمُحَارِبِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْداللَّه قَال: مَنْ مَاتَ وَ لَمْ یَحُجَّ حَجَّةَ الْإِسْلَامِ لَمْ یَمْنَعْهُ مِنْ ذَلِکَ حَاجَةٌ تُجْحِفُ بِهِ أَوْ مَرَضٌ لَا یُطِیقُ فِیهِ الْحَجَّ أَوْ سُلْطَانٌ یَمْنَعُهُ فَلْیَمُتْ یَهُودِیّاً أَوْ نَصْرَانِیّاً

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever dies without having performed his obligatory Hajj, and there was no need that would put him in hardship or harm, nor an illness in which he had no strength for Hajj, nor a ruler who would prevent him from Hajj, then he shall die either a Jew or a Christian!'

5 عَنْ أَبِی حَمْزَةَ الثُّمَالِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ قال سَمِعْتُهُ یَقُولُ مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ یُؤْثِرُ عَلَی الْحَجِّ حَاجَةً مِنْ حَوَائِجِ الدُّنْیَا إِلَّا نَظَرَ إِلَی الْمُحَلِّقِینَ قَدِ انْصَرَفُوا قَبْلَ أَنْ تُقْضَی لَهُ تِلْکَ الْحَاجَةُ

Abu Hamza said: 'I heard Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) saying: 'There is no servant who prefers any worldly need over Hajj unless he sees the heads of those who have returned from Hajj shaved before that need of his is fulfilled!'

6 عَنْ مُعَاوِیَةَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْداللَّه عَنْ رَجُلٍ لَهُ مَالٌ وَ لَمْ یَحُجَّ قَطُّ قَالَ هُوَ مِمَّنْ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَی وَ نَحْشُرُهُ یَوْمَ الْقِیامَةِ أَعْمی قَالَ قُلْتُ: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ أَعْمَی قَالَ أَعْمَاهُ اللَّهُ عَنْ طَرِیقِ اَلْجَنَّة

📚 Al-Tahdhib Vol. 5, p. 18

Muawiyah ibn Ammar said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person who has wealth but has never performed Hajj; the Imam said: 'He is one of those about whom Allah said: 'We will resurrect him blind on the Day of Resurrection!' I said: 'Subhanallah! Blind?!' He said: 'Allah has blinded him from the path to Paradise!'

✅ According to the above narrations and others, Hajj is one of the divine obligations that becomes a duty for the capable person. If someone, despite being able, abandons it or delays it year after year without a valid excuse, they are subject to the severe condemnations mentioned above and elsewhere.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَجِّلْ لِوَلِیِّکَ الْفَرَجَ وَ الْعَافِیَةَ وَ النَّصْر
