Question 1265: Is it permissible for women to attend stadiums to watch and cheer for sports teams?
Answer
✅Answer: A woman's presence in stadiums and sports arenas to watch and cheer for participants has at least three fundamental issues:
1. First issue: The problem of unlawful gaze between a woman and non-mahram men:
1 Ahmad ibn Abi Abdullah narrated that Ibn Umm Maktum (who was blind) requested permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ while Aisha and Hafsa were present.
The Prophet ﷺ told them: Get up and go into the room!
They said: He is blind!
He ﷺ replied: Even though he cannot see you, you can see him!

📚 Iqab al-A'mal, p.338
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The wrath of Allah is severe upon a married woman who fills her gaze with non-mahram men, for if she does so, her every deed will be nullified and invalidated!
2. Second issue: Being present in places of entertainment and gambling, which is considered sinful:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol.5, p.50
Translation: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Any amusement of a believer is invalid except in three cases: training horses, archery, and ... these three are permissible.
✅Important note:
Entertainment and games sometimes remain mere 'play' and are subject to extensive disapproval, as several hadiths indicate. However, if the play turns into a 'competition' or involves 'stakes' or 'gambling,' it becomes more blameworthy and corrupt. Regarding competitions and stakes, consider the following narration:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol.5, p.50
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: A competition (or prize and staking) is only permissible in the owner of a camel (race), horse, or arrow (archery).
✅According to the above hadith, competitions are only permissible in three cases: archery, horse racing, and camel racing. In Al-Tahdhib, Vol.6, p.284, Imam Sadiq ﷺ said: Other competitions with stakes and prizes are considered gambling and are forbidden.
3. Third issue:
Unnecessary leaving of the home by women:
5 Ali (peace be upon him) said: Beware of consulting women, for their opinion may lead to weakness. Shield their eyes with your veil; strict covering is better for you and them, and their going out is no more severe than the entry of an untrustworthy man. If possible, ensure they do not encounter any men other than you.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol.5, p.337
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in a letter to Imam al-Mujtaba (peace be upon him) said: Keep women behind the veil, preserve their sight and gaze; severe concealment is better for both you and them, and their going out is not more severe than an untrustworthy man entering upon them. If possible, let them know no man except you.
6 Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Allah created Eve from Adam; the intent and focus of women is toward men. Therefore, protect and preserve them in homes.

✅According to the above hadiths and others, women going to stadiums to watch and cheer for matches is fundamentally problematic in several respects and has no valid standing in the narrations.
✅It is surprising that despite the above narrations, some claim: 'Women's attendance in stadiums is not problematic in itself!'
While the above narrations make it clear that this act is inherently problematic from multiple aspects.
