Question 1562: A person went to the bathroom with the intention of performing ghusl of janabah, but he is in doubt as to whether he performed the ghusl of janabah or not and is not certain of performing the ghusl of janabah. What is his duty?
Answer
✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Khisal, p. 619, hadith 629
Ali (peace be upon him) said in the four hundred hadith: 'Whoever is on certainty and then doubts, let him pass on his certainty, for indeed doubt does not break certainty!'
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 351
Ishaq ibn Ammar said: 'Imam Kadhim (peace be upon him) said to me: 'If you doubt, base it on certainty!'
I said: 'Is this a principle?' He said: 'Yes!'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 8
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'A person never breaks certainty with doubt, but he breaks it with another certainty!'
✅ According to the principles mentioned in the above narrations and others, a person who was in a state of janabah but doubts whether he performed the ghusl of janabah is obligated to base it on certainty and not break his certainty with doubt. Therefore, such a person is obligated to perform his ghusl of janabah and repeat any prayer he has performed in this state.
