1 عن أَبِی وَلَّادٍ الْحَنَّاطِ عن أَبِی عَبْداللَّه قال: قُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاکَ یَرْوُونَ أَنَّ أَرْوَاحَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ فِی حَوَاصِلِ طُیُورٍ خُضْرٍ حَوْلَ الْعَرْشِ فَقَالَ لَا الْمُؤْمِنُ أَکْرَمُ عَلَی اللَّهِ مِنْ أَنْ یَجْعَلَ رُوحَهُ فِی حَوْصَلَةِ طَیْرٍ وَ لَکِنْ فِی أَبْدَانٍ کَأَبْدَانِهِمْ

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 244

Abi Walad said: I said to Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him: May I be your ransom! They narrate that the souls of the believers are in the crops of green birds around the Divine Throne!

The Imam said: No! The believer is more honorable to Allah than to have his soul placed in the crop of a bird. Rather, they are in bodies similar to their bodies!

2 عن أبی بصیر عن أبی عبداللَّه قال: إِنَّ الْأَرْوَاحَ فِی صِفَةِ الْأَجْسَادِ فِی شَجَرَةٍ فِی الْجَنَّةِ تَعَارَفُ وَ تَسَاءَلُ فَإِذَا قَدِمَتِ الرُّوحُ عَلَی الْأَرْوَاحِ یَقُولُ دَعُوهَا فَإِنَّهَا قَدْ أَفْلَتَتْ مِنْ هَوْلٍ عَظِیمٍ ثُمَّ یَسْأَلُونَهَا مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ وَ مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ فَإِنْ قَالَتْ لَهُمْ تَرَکْتُهُ حَیّاً ارْتَجَوْهُ وَ إِنْ قَالَتْ لَهُمْ قَدْ هَلَکَ قَالُوا قَدْ هَوَی هَوَی

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Indeed, the souls are in the form of bodies in a tree in Paradise, and they recognize one another and ask questions of one another!

So when a soul enters upon the souls, they say: Leave him, for he has been saved from a great terror! Then they ask him: What did so-and-so do, and what did such-and-such do? So if that soul says that I left him alive in the world, they have hope in him, and if he tells them that he has died, they say: He has certainly fallen! He has fallen!

3 عن یونس بن ظبیان قال: کُنْتُ عِندَ أبی عبداللَّه فقال ما یَقُولُ النَّاسُ فی أَرْوَاحِ الْمُؤْمِنِین فَقُلْتُ یَقُولُونَ تَکُونُ فِی حَوَاصِلِ طُیُورٍ خُضْرٍ فِی قَنَادِیلَ تَحْتَ العرش فقال أبوعبداللَّه سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْمُؤْمِنُ أَکْرَمُ عَلَی اللَّهِ مِنْ أَنْ یَجْعَلَ رُوحَهُ فِی حَوْصَلَةِ طَیْرٍ یَا یُونُسُ إِذَا کَانَ ذَلِکَ أَتَاهُ مُحَمَّدٌ و عَلِیٌّ و فَاطِمَةُ و الْحَسَنُ و الْحُسَیْنُ و الْمَلَائِکَةُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ فَإِذَا قَبَضَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ صَیَّرَ تِلْکَ الرُّوحَ فِی قَالَبٍ کَقَالَبِهِ فِی الدُّنْیَا فَیَأْکُلُونَ وَ یَشْرَبُونَ فَإِذَا قَدِمَ عَلَیْهِمُ الْقَادِمُ عَرَفُوهُ بِتِلْکَ الصُّورَةِ الَّتِی کَانَتْ فِی الدُّنْیَا

Yunus said: I was with Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him. The Imam said: What do the people say about the souls of the believers? I said: They say: They are in the crops of green birds in lanterns beneath the Throne! The Imam said: Subhan Allah! The believer is more honorable to Allah than to have his soul placed in the crop of a bird. O Yunus! When his death comes, Muhammad and Ali and Fatimah and Hasan and Husayn and the closest angels, peace be upon all of them, come to him, and when Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, takes his soul, that soul takes a form and shape like its form in the world, and they eat and drink, and when a person comes to them, they recognize him in the same form and shape he had in the world!

4 عن أبی بصیر قال: قلت لأبی عبداللَّه إِنَّا نَتَحَدَّثُ عَنْ أَرْوَاحِ الْمُؤْمِنِین أَنَّهَا فی حَوَاصِلِ طُیُورٍ خُضْرٍ تَرْعَی فی الْجَنَّة و تَأْوِی إِلَی قَنَادیلَ تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ فقال لا إِذاً مَا هِیَ فی حَوَاصِلِ طَیْرٍ قُلْتُ فَأَیْنَ هِیَ قال فی رَوْضَةٍ کَهَیْئَةِ الْأَجْسادِ فِی الْجَنَّة

Abu Basir said: I said to Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him: We narrate about the souls of the believers that they are in the crops of green birds, and they wander in Paradise and take a place in lanterns beneath the Divine Throne! The Imam said: No! In that case, they are not in the crops of birds. I said: So where are they? He said: They are in a garden in Paradise, in the form and shape of bodies!

✅ Based on the above narrations, the soul of a believer after death takes a form and shape similar to its worldly body, such that when it enters upon other souls, they see and recognize it in the same form and shape it had in the world and they ask and answer questions with it.

✅ Some have called this intermediate body 'Hurqaliya,' which is said to be from old Greek words, and there is no trace of it in the narrations of the infallible ones.
