Question 231: Is it obligatory for a traveler to recite the Tasbihat Arba’a after shortened prayers?

عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ حَفْصٍ الْمَرْوَزِيِّ قَالَ: قَالَ الْفَقِيهُ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ يَجِبُ عَلَى الْمُسَافِرِ أَنْ يَقُولَ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ يُقَصِّرُ فِيهَا- سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ثَلَاثِينَ مَرَّةً لِتَمَامِ الصَّلَاةِ.

Translation: Suleiman ibn Hafs Marwazi says: Imam Askari (peace be upon him) said: It is obligatory for a traveler to say thirty times after every shortened prayer to complete the prayer:
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
✅عَنْ رَجَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي الضَّحَّاكِ عَنِ الرِّضَا أَنَّهُ صَحِبَهُ فِي سَفَرٍ فَكَانَ يَقُولُ بَعْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ يَقْصُرُهَا- سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ثَلَاثِينَ مَرَّةً وَ يَقُولُ هَذَا تَمَامُ الصَّلَاةِ.
📚 Uyun Akhbar al-Reza, Vol. 2, p. 182
Translation: Raja ibn Abi Dahhak, who accompanied Imam Reza (peace be upon him) from Medina to Merv, says: The Imam (peace be upon him) would say thirty times after every shortened prayer:
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
And he would say: This completes the prayer.

عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ أَ رَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ جَمَعْتُمْ مَا عِنْدَكُمْ مِنَ الثِّيَابِ وَ الْآنِيَةِ ثُمَّ وَضَعْتُمْ بَعْضَهُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ أَ تَرَوْنَهُ يَبْلُغُ السَّمَاءَ قَالُوا لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ يَقُولُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ- سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ثَلَاثِينَ مَرَّةً وَ هُنَّ يَدْفَعْنَ الْهَدْمَ وَ الْغَرَقَ وَ الْحَرَقَ وَ التَّرَدِّيَ فِي الْبِئْرِ وَ أَكْلَ السَّبُعِ وَ مِيتَةَ السَّوْءِ وَ الْبَلِيَّةَ الَّتِي نَزَلَتْ عَلَى الْعَبْدِ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَ هُنَّ الْبَاقِيَاتُ الصَّالِحَاتُ

Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said to his companions: Tell me, if you gathered all your clothes and vessels and stacked them, would they reach the sky? They said: No, O Messenger of Allah. He said: When one of you finishes the prayer and says thirty times:
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
These recitations ward off collapse of walls, drowning, fire, falling into a well, being devoured by a predator, a bad death, and calamities that may befall a servant on that day, and they are among the enduring righteous deeds.

Translation: Harith says: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: Whoever says forty times after an obligatory prayer before moving their feet:
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
Then asks Allah for something, it will be granted to them.
