Question 224: Is the oil and medicine made from earthworms considered pure?

✅ Answer: Earthworms refer to long worms found in the mud of rivers and streams, and also to long worms observed during plowing or tilling the soil, which have a brown color. Medicines have been prepared from these worms since ancient times, and nowadays, oils and medicines are derived from earthworms, which are used for volumizing body parts.

✅ To determine the purity or impurity of earthworms, we refer to the following narrations:

📚 Tahzib, Vol. 1, p. 230

Translation: Ammar Sabati says, "I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a black beetle, fly, cockroach, ant, and similar creatures that die in a well, olive oil, animal oil, and the like. The Imam said, 'Anything (meaning any living being) that does not have blood does not pose a problem.'"

📚 Tahzib, Vol. 1, p. 231

Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said, "Water does not become impure unless it is contaminated by a living being that has flowing and repulsive blood."

✅ Other narrations also indicate that creatures without flowing blood, whether alive or dead, are considered pure. Therefore, according to these narrations, earthworms are pure, and if oil or medicine containing earthworms is applied to the body, there is no need for purification, and it is considered pure.
