✅Answer:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 291
Translation: Imam Sadiq or Imam Baqir (peace be upon them) said: 'The obligatory shroud for men is three pieces of cloth, and the turban and the loincloth are Sunnah, and as for the shroud for women, its obligatory is five pieces of cloth.'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 145
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'The deceased is wrapped in five pieces of cloth: a shirt without buttons, a loincloth, a piece of cloth (khirqah) with which the middle of his body is tied, a burd (or all-encompassing piece) in which he is wrapped, and a turban that is tied on him and its excess is placed on his chest.'
✅According to the two above narrations, the shroud consists of five pieces:
1- The khirqah (loincloth): Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: 'The khirqah should be long so that you can tightly wrap his two thighs from above the hips to the knees.'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 142
2- The qamis or shirt:
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: 'The shroud is a shirt without buttons and without a second stitching.'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 145
📚 Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 153
Imam Kadhim (peace be upon him) was asked: 'A man dies, can he be shrouded in three pieces without a shirt?' He said: 'There is no problem, but the shirt is more beloved to me.'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 293
Sahl asked Imam Kadhim (peace be upon him): 'Can the clothes that a person prayed and fasted in be used to shroud him?' The Imam said: 'I like such a shroud,' meaning it should be used as a shirt.
As a result, a piece of cloth can be used in place of a shirt, or a piece of cloth can be made into a shirt during the shrouding, but it should not be sewn and no buttons should be placed on it, or a shirt that has been used for prayer and fasting can be used for the shroud after its buttons are removed.
3- The izar or loincloth, about which Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in the hadith 📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 305: 'The izar should be long enough to cover the chest and the feet.'
4- The turban: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'The middle of the turban is taken and wrapped around the head of the deceased in a circular manner, and the excess on the right side is placed over the left, and the left over the right, and then it is pulled over his chest.'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 143
✅Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'A woman is shrouded in five pieces of cloth, one of which is a khimar, which is a headscarf.'
For a woman, a piece of cloth similar to a headscarf that covers her head and neck is used in place of a turban.
5- The burd or all-encompassing piece, which is placed over the entire body and shrouds of the deceased and in which the deceased is actually wrapped.
✅A woman's shroud has one additional piece besides the four mentioned above:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 147
One of the companions said: I asked the Imam: 'How is a woman shrouded?' He said: 'The same as a man, except that we tie her breasts to her chest with a piece of cloth and tie it over her waist.'
✅According to the narrations, some of which were mentioned, the required pieces for the shroud based on experience are:
1- A piece of cloth with a width of one and a half spans and a length of about two to three meters or more, with which his two thighs are wrapped together from above the hips to the knees.
2- A shirt (Arabic) without buttons or a piece of cloth that can be made into a shirt during the shrouding, or a piece of cloth with a width of at least one and a half meters and a length of about one meter and sixty centimeters.
3- The izar (loincloth): A piece of cloth with a width of at least one and a half meters and a length of about one meter and sixty centimeters.
4- The turban: A piece of cloth that can be wrapped around the head of the deceased and its excess is placed in a cross shape on the chest of the deceased (with a minimum length of one and a half meters).
5- The all-encompassing piece: A piece of cloth with a length of about two meters and thirty centimeters and a width of at least one and a half meters.
6- For women, a piece of cloth the size of a headscarf is used to tie on their heads instead of a turban, as well as a piece of cloth with a width of about one span and a length of about one meter and twenty centimeters to tie her breasts to her chest.
