Question 1419: When we go to Karbala, should we first visit Imam Hussein (prayers of God be upon him) or Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas (prayers of God be upon him)?
Answer
✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 6, p. 42
Imam Baqir (prayers of God be upon him) said: 'Order our Shi'a to visit the grave of Hussein (peace be upon him), for indeed, visiting him increases provision, lengthens life, and repels bad events. And visiting Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) has been made obligatory upon every believer who acknowledges his imamate from God.'
📚 Kamil al-Ziyarat, p. 122
Umm Sa'id said: Imam Sadiq (prayers of God be upon him) said to me: 'O Umm Sa'id! Do you visit the grave of Hussein (peace be upon him)?' I said: 'Yes!' Then the Imam said: 'O Umm Sa'id, visit him, for indeed, the visitation of Hussein (peace be upon him) is obligatory upon men and women.'
📚 Mustadrak al-Wasa'il, vol. 10, p. 258
Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them both) said: 'O Zurarah! There is no believing woman on earth except that it is obligatory upon her to assist and help Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her) with the visitation of Hussein (peace be upon him)!'
📚 Kamil al-Ziyarat, p. 122
Imam Sadiq (prayers of God be upon him) said: 'If one of you performs Hajj his entire life but does not visit Hussein ibn Ali, he has certainly abandoned a right from the rights of the Messenger of God (prayers of God be upon him and his family), for indeed the right of Hussein (peace be upon him) is a 'farida' (obligation) and a duty from God upon every Muslim.'
✅ Also, pay attention to the following narration:
5 From Musa ibn Ismail ibn Musa ibn Ja'far, from his father, from his forefathers (peace be upon them), he said: The Messenger of God (prayers of God be upon him and his family) said: 'Visiting Banu Hashim when sick is an 'farida' (obligation) and visiting them (in general) is a 'sunnah' (tradition)!'
📚 Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 96, p. 234
Musa ibn Ja'far (prayers of God be upon him) narrated from his father from his grandfathers that the Messenger of God (prayers of God be upon him and his family) said: 'Visiting Banu Hashim when sick is an 'farida' and visiting them is a 'sunnah'!'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 1, p. 109
Imam Kazim (prayers of God be upon him) said in a hadith: 'When a 'sunnah' and a 'farida' come together, the 'farida' is begun with (first the 'farida' is performed)!'
📚 Kamil al-Ziyarat, p. 197
Imam Sadiq (prayers of God be upon him) said in a hadith: 'When you want to go to Imam Hussein (prayers of God be upon him), perform a ghusl in the Euphrates...' until he said: 'Then walk barefoot...' until you reach the gate of Hussein, then say: 'Peace be upon you, O Proof of God...' '
✅ It is clear from some of the narrated visitations of Imam Hussein (prayers of God be upon him), which are narrated with etiquette for at home, on the road, upon arrival, and so on, that the visitation of Imam Hussein (prayers of God be upon him) is performed first.
Also, according to the general principle mentioned in hadith 6 , when a 'farida' and a 'sunnah' coincide, the 'farida' is performed first. And according to the obligation ('farida') of visiting Imam Hussein (prayers of God be upon him) and the tradition ('sunnah') of visiting Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (prayers of God be upon him), upon entering Karbala, Imam Hussein (prayers of God be upon him) is visited first, and then Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (prayers of God be upon him) is visited.
✅ What some eulogists recommend—that we should first visit Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas (prayers of God be upon him) and seek permission from him to visit Imam Hussein (prayers of God be upon him)—is not jurisprudential and is based on emotions!
