مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَلَبِيِّ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فِي الْوَتْرِ إِنَّمَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ الْخَمْسَ وَ لَيْسَتِ الْوَتْرُ مَكْتُوبَةً إِنْ شِئْتَ صَلَّيْتَهَا وَ تَرْكُهَا قَبِيحٌ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said regarding the Witr prayer: Indeed, Allah has made the five daily prayers obligatory, and the Witr prayer is not obligatory (Fard). If you wish, you may perform it, but abandoning it is considered improper and undesirable.
