1 عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِی عُمَیْرٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: یُکْرَهُ الْمُفْدَمُ إِلَّا لِلْعَرُوسِ.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 447

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Intense red clothing is disliked (makrooh) except for a woman or a man who has recently married!

2 عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: جَاءَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِیلَ وَ قَدِ اعْتَمَرْنَا عُمْرَةَ رَجَبٍ وَ نَحْنُ یَوْمَئِذٍ بِمَکَّةَ فَقَالَ یَا عَمِّ إِنِّی أُرِیدُ بَغْدَادَ وَ قَدْ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أُوَدِّعَ عَمِّی أَبَا الْحَسَنِ یَعْنِی مُوسَی بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ وَ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ تَذْهَبَ مَعِی إِلَیْهِ... إلی ان قال.. فَخَرَجَ وَ عَلَیْهِ إِزَارٌ مُمَشَّقٌ قَدْ عَقَدَهُ فِی عُنُقِهِ.....

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 1, p. 485

Ali ibn Ja'far said: While we were performing the Umrah of the month of Rajab and were in Mecca that day, Muhammad ibn Isma'il (meaning the grandson of Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him) came to me and said: O uncle! I intend to go to Baghdad and I would like to bid farewell to my uncle Abu al-Hasan, meaning Musa ibn Ja'far, peace be upon him, and I would like you to come with me to him... until he said: Then Imam Kadhim, peace be upon him, came out, wearing a loincloth dyed red with mishq (red clay) and had tied it around his neck...!

3 عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنِ الصَّادِقِ عَنْ آبَائِهِ قَالَ: إِنَّ أَعْرَابِيّاً أَتَى النَّبِيَّ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ فِي رِدَاءٍ مُمَشَّقٍ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ لَقَدْ خَرَجْتَ إِلَيَّ كَأَنَّكَ فَتًى فَقَالَ نَعَمْ يَا أَعْرَابِيُّ أَنَا الْفَتَى ابْنُ الْفَتَى أَخُو الْفَتَى الْخَبَرَ

📚 Ma'ani al-Akhbar, p. 119

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, narrated from his ancestors that he said: A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet came out to him wearing a red cloak dyed with mishq (red clay)! He said: O Muhammad! You have come out to me as if you are a young man! The Prophet said: Yes, O Bedouin! I am a young man, and I am the son of a young man and the brother of a young man...!

4 عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ وَ عَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ أَحْمَرُ قَالَ فَأَحْدَدْتُ النَّظَرَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ إِنَّ هَذَا لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْسٌ ثُمَّ تَلَا قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي أَخْرَجَ لِعِبادِهِ وَ الطَّيِّباتِ مِنَ الرِّزْقِ

📚 Tafsir al-Ayyashi, Vol. 2, p. 14, h. 30

Hakam ibn Uyaynah said: I saw Abu Ja'far (meaning Imam Baqir, peace be upon him) wearing a red loincloth! I stared at him! The Imam said: O Abu Muhammad! Indeed, there is no problem with this. Then he recited (verse 32 of Surah Al-A'raf): 'Say, who has forbidden the ornaments of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good things of provision?'

5 عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: صِبْغُنَا الْبَهْرَمَانُ وَ صِبْغُ بَنِی أُمَیَّةَ الزَّعْفَرَانُ.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 448

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Our color is with the plant 'usfur' (with red and yellow dyes), and the color of Bani Umayyah is saffron!

6 عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: قَالَ أَمِیرُ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ نَهَانِی رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَنْ لُبْسِ ثِیَابِ الشُّهْرَةِ وَ لَا أَقُولُ: نَهَاکُمْ عَنْ لُبْسِ الْمُعَصْفَرِ الْمُفْدَمِ.

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Amir al-Mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade me from wearing a garment of fame, and I do not say that he forbade you from wearing clothing dyed with the 'usfur' plant!

7 عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ کَانَتْ لَهُ مِلْحَفَةٌ مُوَرَّسَةٌ یَلْبَسُهَا فِی أَهْلِهِ حَتَّی یُرْدَعَ عَلَی جَسَدِهِ.

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had a red blanket dyed with the 'wars' plant, which he would wear next to his wife, to the extent that the traces of its color were on his body!

8 عَنْ جَرَّاحٍ الْمَدَائِنِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: إِنَّا نَلْبَسُ الْمُعَصْفَرَاتِ وَ الْمُضَرَّجَاتِ.

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: We wear clothes dyed with the 'usfur' plant and red-dyed clothes!

9 عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الْکُوفِیِّ عَنْ عَمِّهِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ الْکَرْخِیِّ قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَی أَبِی الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا فَخَرَجَ إِلَیَّ وَ هُوَ مُتَّزِرٌ بِإِزَارٍ مُوَرَّدٍ الْحَدِیثَ.

Karkhi said: I entered upon Imam Reza, peace be upon him, and he came out to me wearing a rose-colored loincloth!

10 عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَعْيَنَ قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ وَ عَلَيْهِ مِلْحَفَةٌ حَمْرَاءُ شَدِيدَةُ الْحُمْرَةِ فَتَبَسَّمْتُ حِينَ دَخَلْتُ فَقَالَ كَأَنِّي أَعْلَمُ لِمَ ضَحِكْتَ ضَحِكْتَ مِنْ هَذَا الثَّوْبِ الَّذِي هُوَ عَلَيَّ إِنَّ الثَّقَفِيَّةَ أَكْرَهَتْنِي عَلَيْهِ وَ أَنَا أُحِبُّهَا فَأَكْرَهَتْنِي عَلَى لُبْسِهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّا لَا نُصَلِّي فِي هَذَا وَ لَا تُصَلُّوا فِي الْمُشْبَعِ الْمُضَرَّجِ...

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 447

Malik ibn A'yan said: I entered upon Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, and he had a blanket and a intensely red cover on him. When I entered, I smiled! The Imam said: It is as if I know why you laughed! You laughed at this clothing that is on me! Indeed, this Thaqafi woman compelled me to it, and I love that woman, and she compelled me to wear it! Then he said: Indeed, we do not pray in this clothing, and do not pray in intense, deep red clothing!

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Prayer in clothing dyed with an intense and deep red color is disliked!

2 1 عَنْ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ خَلِيفَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ الصَّلَاةَ فِي الْمُشْبَعِ بِالْعُصْفُرِ وَ الْمُضَرَّجِ بِالزَّعْفَرَانِ.

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, disliked praying in yellow (or red) clothing dyed intensely with the 'usfur' plant and reddened with saffron!

3 1 قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ کُنَّا نَلْبَسُ الْمُعَصْفَرَ فِی الْبَیْتِ.

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: We wear clothes dyed with the 'usfur' plant at home!

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, dyeing fabric red was done with various things, some of which are:

'Mishq,' which was a type of red clay.

The plant 'usfur,' which had yellow and also red dyes and is the same as 'bahraman.'

'Saffron,' which, according to narration 5, Bani Umayyah mostly used to redden clothes.

'Wars,' which is a plant like sesame and is used to give a red color.

✅ The colors were created on the fabrics in light to intense shades by the above-mentioned substances.

✅ According to the above narrations, intense red is not a problem for a person who has recently married, but praying in intense red clothing is disliked, and it is also disliked for others.

✅ The Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them, also wore various rose-colored and red clothes dyed with red clay and with the 'usfur' plant at home and with their families, and sometimes even came to people at the door of their house in that same clothing.

✅ Today, fabric dyeing is mostly done with chemicals, and according to the above narrations, only intense red clothing is disliked in normal situations and for prayer, but for a man and a woman who have recently married, and for the time they are at home and with their spouse, there is no prohibition.
