Question 1281: Where was the pure head of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) buried after being taken to Sham (Syria)?

✅Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
1️⃣ From Mubarak al-Khabbaz, he said: Abu 'Abdillah said to me, 'Saddle the mule and the donkey' at the time when he arrived while he was in al-Hira. He said: 'So he rode, and I rode until we entered al-Jurf. Then he dismounted and prayed two rak'ahs, then he proceeded a little further and prayed two rak'ahs, then he proceeded a little further and prayed two rak'ahs. Then he rode back.' I said to him: 'May I be your sacrifice! What were the first two, the second two, and the third two?' He said: 'The first two rak'ahs were the location of the grave of Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him), the second two rak'ahs were the location of the head of al-Hussein, and the third two rak'ahs were the location of the pulpit of al-Qa'im.'

Mubarak said: 'When Imam Sadiq (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in al-Hira, he came and said to me: 'Saddle the mule and the donkey.' So he rode, and I rode with him until we entered the ravine (al-Jurf). Then he dismounted and prayed two rak'ahs, then he went a little further and prayed two rak'ahs, then he went a little further and prayed two more rak'ahs. Then he rode back. I said to him: 'May I be your sacrifice! What were the first two rak'ahs, what were the second two rak'ahs, and what were the third two rak'ahs?' He said: 'The first two rak'ahs were the location of the grave of Amir al-Mu'minin (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the second two rak'ahs were the location of the head of Imam Hussein (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the third two rak'ahs are the location of the pulpit of al-Qa'im (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)!'
2 عَنْ عمر بْنِ عبداللَّه بْنِ طلحة النَّهْدِیِّ عنْ أَبیهِ قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَی أَبِی عَبْداللَّه فَذَکَرَ حَدِیثاً حَدَّثَنَاهُ قَالَ مَضَیْنَا مَعَهُ یَعْنِی أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّه حَتَّی انْتَهَیْنَا إِلَی الْغَرِیِّ قَالَ فَأَتَی مَوْضِعاً فَصَلَّی ثُمَّ قَالَ لِإِسْمَاعِیلَ قُمْ فَصَلِّ عِنْدَ رَأْسِ أَبِیکَ الْحُسَیْنِ قُلْتُ أَ لَیْسَ قَدْ ذُهِبَ بِرَأْسِهِ إِلَی الشَّام قَالَ بَلَی وَ لَکِنْ فُلَانٌ مَوْلَانَا سَرَقَهُ فَجَاءَ بِهِ فَدَفَنَهُ هَاهُنَا

'Abdullah said: 'We went with Imam Sadiq (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until we reached Ghari (Najaf). Then the Imam reached a place and prayed there, then he said to Isma'il (his son): 'Arise and pray near the head of your father Hussein (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).' I said: 'Wasn't his head taken to Sham?' He said: 'Yes, but a certain person from our friends stole it and brought it and buried it here!'
3 عن یَزِیدَ بن عمرَ بْنِ طَلْحَة قال: قال لِی أَبُو عَبْداللَّه وَ هُوَ بِالْحِیرَة أَ مَا تُرِیدُ مَا وَعَدْتُکَ قُلْتُ بَلَی یَعْنِی الذَّهَابَ إِلَی قَبْرِ أَمِیرِ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ قَالَ فَرَکِبَ وَ رَکِبَ إِسْمَاعِیلُ وَ رَکِبْتُ مَعَهُمَا حَتَّی إِذَا جَازَ الثُّوَیَّةَ وَ کَانَ بَیْنَ الْحِیرَةِ وَ النَّجَفِ عِنْدَ ذَکَوَاتٍ بِیضٍ نَزَلَ و نَزَلَ إِسْمَاعِیلُ و نَزَلْتُ مَعَهُمَا فَصَلَّی وَ صَلَّی إِسْمَاعِیلُ وَ صَلَّیْتُ فَقَالَ لِإِسْمَاعِیلَ قُمْ فَسَلِّمْ عَلَی جَدِّکَ الْحُسَیْنِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاکَ أَ لَیْسَ الْحُسَیْنُ بِکَرْبَلَاءَ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ وَ لَکِنْ لَمَّا حُمِلَ رَأْسُهُ إِلَی الشَّامِ سَرَقَهُ مَوْلًی لَنَا فَدَفَنَهُ بِجَنْبِ أَمِیرالْمُؤْمِنِین
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 4, p. 571
Yazid ibn 'Umar said: 'Imam Sadiq (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me while they were in the land of al-Hira: 'Don't you want what I promised you?' (meaning to go to the grave of Amir al-Mu'minin, peace be upon him) I said: 'Yes!' So he rode, and Isma'il also rode, and I rode with them until, when they passed the area of Thawiyah, which is between Karbala and Najaf, he dismounted near the white pebbles, and Isma'il also dismounted, and I dismounted with them. So the حضرت prayed, and Isma'il also prayed, and I also prayed.'
Then the حضرت said to Isma'il: 'Arise and greet your grandfather Hussein.'
I said: 'May I be your sacrifice! Is not Hussein (peace be upon him) in Karbala?'
He said: 'Yes, but when his head was taken to Sham, one of our friends stole it and buried it next to Amir al-Mu'minin (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)!'
4 عن علی بن أَسْبَاطٍ رفعه قال: قال أَبُو عَبْداللَّه إِنَّکَ إِذَا أَتَیْتَ الْغَرِیَّ رَأَیْتَ قَبْرَیْنِ قَبْراً کَبِیراً و قَبْراً صَغِیراً فَأَمَّا الْکَبِیرُ فَقَبْرُ أَمِیرِ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ و أَمَّا الصَّغِیرُ فَرَأْسُ الْحُسَیْن

Imam Sadiq (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'When you reach Ghari (meaning Najaf), you will see two graves: a large grave and a small grave! As for the large one, it is the grave of Amir al-Mu'minin (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and as for the small grave, it is the head of al-Hussein!'
✅ According to the above narrations and others, the pure head of Imam Hussein (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was buried in Najaf near the grave of Amir al-Mu'minin (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
