📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 79

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Rinsing the mouth and nose are among the things that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, made a sunnah!

📚 Qurb al-Isnad, p. 83

Ali ibn Ja'far asked his brother Musa ibn Ja'far about rinsing the mouth and nose; the Imam said: It is not obligatory, and if you leave them out, you do not repeat the prayer because of them!

📚 Amali al-Tusi, Vol. 1, p. 29

Amir al-Mu'minin, peace be upon him, in his covenant to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr when he gave him the governorship of Egypt, wrote: ...And be careful with wudu, for it is the completer of prayer: rinse your mouth three times and your nose three times, and wash your face and then your right hand and then your left hand, then wipe your head and your two feet, for I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, do this, and know that wudu is half of faith!

📚 Amali al-Saduq, p. 160, H. 1

Imam Mujtaba, peace be upon him, said: A Jew came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family... and asked him questions, until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said regarding wudu: ...Then the Lord made rinsing the mouth a sunnah for my ummah so that the heart may be purified from the unlawful, and He also made rinsing the nose a sunnah so that the smell of Hell and its stench may be forbidden to them! The Jew said: You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad! What is the reward for the one who performs (the acts of wudu)? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: When he first touches the water, Satan moves away from him, and when he rinses his mouth, Allah illuminates his heart and tongue with wisdom, and when he rinses his nose, Allah grants him security from the fire and provides him with the scent of Paradise!

📚 Al-Ja'fariyyat, p. 16

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: Each of you should be thorough in rinsing your mouth and nose, for it is a reason for the forgiveness of what the servant has spoken and the departure of Satan!

✅ Rinsing the mouth means moving water around in the mouth, and rinsing the nose means moving water around in the nose, which, according to the above narrations and others, is done three times each and is among the sunnahs of wudu and has a great reward, but they are not obligatory, and leaving them out intentionally or by mistake does not cause any problem for the prayer or wudu.

✅ Rinsing the mouth and nose are also mentioned in narrations for before ghusl and rinsing the mouth for after brushing the teeth.
