Question

Question 149 - Can we wish for death?

456 views 13 Feb 2021

Answer

Answer: The matter in question will be clarified with the mention of a few hadiths:

📚Nahj al-Balagha, Letter 69

Translation: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: 'Do not wish for death except with a firm condition.'

✅In this hadith, wishing for death is conditioned upon having a firm support, and given the sins we have, it cannot be said that we possess the firm condition. It is better to act in the manner that the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) have taught us in their supplications, which will be mentioned below.

📚Mustadrak al-Wasail

Translation: Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) heard a person wishing for death. The Imam said to him: 'Is there a kinship or relationship between you and Allah for which He would protect you?' He said: 'No.' The Imam said: 'Do you then have good deeds that are more than your sins?' He said: 'No.' The Imam said: 'In that case, you are wishing for eternal destruction.'

✅Again, the prohibition against wishing for death is clear in the above hadith.

📚Kashf al-Ghumma

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said to a man who was wishing for death: 'Wish for life so that you may obey Allah and not disobey Him. For if you live and obey Allah, it is better for you than to die and neither disobey nor obey.'

It is narrated in the book Al-Kafi that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), when he finished his prayer, would recite this supplication:

📚Al-Kafi

✅In a part of the above supplication, we say:

Translation: 'O Allah, keep me alive as long as You know that life is better for me, and cause me to die when You know that death is better for me.'

✅In a part of the twentieth supplication of Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya, we read:

Translation: 'Give me life as long as my life is spent in Your obedience, but when my life becomes a pasture for Satan, take my soul before Your wrath precedes me or Your anger becomes firm against me.'

Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) said in a supplication: '(O Allah) Make me one of those whose life You prolong and whose deeds You make good.'

✅In the hadiths, many actions such as visiting Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) are considered to cause longevity, and it is better to recite the above supplications instead of wishing for death.
