1 عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الدَّيْلَمِيِّ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ الزَّلْزَلَةِ مَا هِيَ فَقَالَ آيَةٌ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ سَبَبَهَا إِلَى أَنْ قَالَ قُلْتُ فَإِذَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ فَمَا أَصْنَعُ قَالَ صَلِّ صَلَاةَ الْكُسُوفِ الْحَدِيثَ.

Sulayman al-Daylami asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, about an earthquake, what is it? The Imam said: It is a sign and a token, and then he mentioned its cause until he said: I said: So when this happens, what should I do? The Imam said: Pray the eclipse prayer (Ayat prayer)!

2 عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الصَّادِقِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: إِنَّ الزَّلَازِلَ وَ الْكُسُوفَيْنِ وَ الرِّيَاحَ الْهَائِلَةَ مِنْ عَلَامَاتِ السَّاعَةِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ شَيْئاً مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَتَذَكَّرُوا قِيَامَ السَّاعَةِ وَ افْزَعُوا إِلَى مَسَاجِدِكُمْ.

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Earthquakes and eclipses of the sun and moon and terrifying winds are among the signs of the Hour (of Resurrection), so when you see something of that, remember the rising of the Hour (of Resurrection) and take refuge in the mosques.

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, when people become aware of an earthquake in an ordinary way and see it, it is undoubtedly obligatory for them to perform the 'Ayat' prayer, but they have not placed a duty on us regarding minor earthquakes that are recently detected by a device and no one feels them in an ordinary way. In other words, it is an earthquake with the ability to be perceived and noticed that people became aware of from the words of the Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them, and they performed the prayer for those cases alone.

Therefore, for an earthquake that is only known through reading the news of seismographs on social media and elsewhere and none of the people notice it, the 'Ayat' prayer has not been specified in the narrations.
