Question 1072: Does the deceased know who has come to visit their grave?

1 عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّه الْمَوْتَى نَزُورُهُمْ قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ فَيَعْلَمُونَ بِنَا إِذَا أَتَيْنَاهُمْ فَقَالَ إِي وَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَيَعْلَمُونَ بِكُمْ وَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِكُمْ وَ يَسْتَأْنِسُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ.

Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I said to Imam Sadiq (prayers of Allah be upon him): 'Should we visit the deceased?' He said: 'Yes!' I said: 'Do they know when we go to them?' He said: 'Yes! By Allah! Indeed, they become aware of you and they are happy because of you and they feel at ease with you!'
2 عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ الْمُؤْمِنُ يَعْلَمُ مَنْ يَزُورُ قَبْرَهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ لَا يَزَالُ مُسْتَأْنِساً بِهِ مَا زَالَ عِنْدَ قَبْرِهِ فَإِذَا قَامَ وَ انْصَرَفَ مِنْ قَبْرِهِ دَخَلَهُ مِنِ انْصِرَافِهِ عَنْ قَبْرِهِ وَحْشَةٌ.

Ishaq ibn Ammar said: I said to Imam Kadhim (prayers of Allah be upon him): 'Does the believer know who visits his grave?' He said: 'Yes! He is continuously at ease with him until he is at his grave, so when he gets up and returns from his grave, fear enters him from his return from his grave!'
3 عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ زُورُوا مَوْتَاكُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَفْرَحُونَ بِزِيَارَتِكُمْ وَ لْيَطْلُبْ أَحَدُكُمْ حَاجَتَهُ عِنْدَ قَبْرِ أَبِيهِ وَ عِنْدَ قَبْرِ أُمِّهِ بِمَا [بَعْدَ ما] يَدْعُو لَهُمَا.

Imam Sadiq (prayers of Allah be upon him) said: 'Amir al-Mu'minin (prayers of Allah be upon him) said: 'Visit your deceased ones because they are made happy by your visit, and each of you should seek his need at the grave of his father and at the grave of his mother, after he supplicates for them!'
4 عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ إِذَا أَتَاهُ الزَّائِرُ أَنِسَ بِهِ فَإِذَا انْصَرَفَ عَنْهُ اسْتَوْحَشَ فَقَالَ لَا يَسْتَوْحِشُ.

Safwan ibn Yahya said: I said to Musa ibn Ja'far (prayers of Allah be upon him): 'I have been informed that the believer feels at ease with the visitor when he comes to him and becomes fearful when he returns from him?' The Imam said: 'He does not become fearful!'
5 عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى فِي جُمْلَةِ حَدِيثٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ يَعْنِي لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ هَلْ يَسْمَعُ الْمَيِّتُ تَسْلِيمَ مَنْ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ يَسْمَعُ أُولَئِكَ وَ هُمْ كُفَّارٌ وَ لَا يَسْمَعُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Safwan ibn Yahya said: I said to Imam Kadhim (prayers of Allah be upon him): 'Does the deceased hear the greeting of the one who greets him?' He said: 'Yes! They hear when they are disbelievers, and do they not hear when they are believers?!'
6 عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنِ الْبَاقِرِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ فَزُرْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ كَانَ مِنْهُمْ فِي ضِيقٍ وُسِّعَ عَلَيْهِ مَا بَيْنَ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ إِلَى طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ يَعْلَمُونَ بِمَنْ أَتَاهُمْ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ فَإِذَا طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ كَانُوا سُدًى قُلْتُ فَيَعْلَمُونَ بِمَنْ أَتَاهُمْ فَيَفْرَحُونَ بِهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَ يَسْتَوْحِشُونَ لَهُ إِذَا انْصَرَفَ عَنْهُمْ

Abdullah ibn Sulayman said: I asked Imam Baqir (prayers of Allah be upon him) about visiting graves; the Imam said: 'When it is Friday, visit them because each of them, if they are in distress, is given a respite between the rising of the dawn and the rising of the sun. They know who has come to them every day, so when the sun rises, they are left to their state.'
I said: 'Do they know who has come to them so that they are made happy and joyful?' He said: 'Yes, and when they return from them, they become fearful!'
✅ According to the above narrations and others, the deceased know who has come to visit them, they hear his greeting, and they feel at ease with him.
✅ Let us not forget to visit our deceased ones, as it makes them happy.
