Question 972: What is the ruling on eating caviar and sturgeon fish (ozun burun)?

✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 219

Muhammad ibn Muslim says in a narration: I said to Imam Baqir, peace be upon him: May Allah have mercy on you! Fish are brought to us that do not have scales (qishr, pulak, fulus)!

The Imam said: From the fish, eat those that have scales (qishr) and do not eat those that do not have scales (qishr)!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 219

Hammad ibn Uthman says: I said to Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him: May I be your ransom! Which fish can be eaten?

He said: Those that have scales (qishr, fulus, pulak)!

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 323

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: From the fish, eat those that have scales (fulus) and do not eat those that do not have scales (fulus)!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 220

Hanan says: Ala ibn Kamil asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, about the jerri fish, and I was present!

The Master said: We found in the book of Ali, peace be upon him, certain fish listed as forbidden, so do not approach them! Then Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Do not approach fish that do not have scales (qishr, fulus, pulak)!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 220

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Amir al-Mu’minin, peace be upon him, would ride the mule of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, in Kufa, passing by the fish market, and say: Do not eat or sell fish that do not have scales or pulak!

✅ According to numerous narrations, a few of which have been mentioned, fish that have scales and pulak on their bodies are deemed permissible (halal), while those without scales and pulak are deemed forbidden (haram).

✅ Caviar refers to the unfertilized eggs obtained from the ovaries of female sturgeon fish, some of which include:

Beluga (fil mahi)

Ship mahi

Chalbash

Qara burun

Ozun burun (sturgeon)

✅ Unfortunately, none of these fish have scales or pulak, and according to the above narrations and others, eating these fish, consuming their parts such as caviar, and selling them are forbidden (haram).

✅ It should be noted that until not too many years ago, Shia considered sturgeon fish (ozun burun) and its caviar to be haram. However, due to incorrect reports about them and claims of the presence of fine scales, they were deemed permissible, leading to a significant increase in the buying and selling of their caviar!

✅ It is evident that if there exist sturgeon fish with scales, there would be no prohibition on eating them, their caviar, or buying and selling them.
