Question 920: Can a person who is among the groups whose prayer is full while traveling pray shortened due to being in a hurry?
Answer
People whose prayer is full while traveling.
✅Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 4, p. 128
Imam Sadiq (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'The mukari, meaning the one who rents out a mount (i.e., someone who rents out his mount for transporting goods and passengers) and a camel driver who constantly travels and does not have a residence, performs the prayer in full and fasts in the month of Ramadan.'
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 436
Imam Baqir (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Four groups of people, whether they are traveling or at home, are obligated to perform their prayer and fast in full:
The mukari, meaning the one who rents out a mount,
And the kari, meaning the one who rents it (or the one who rents it out),
And the shepherd,
And the messenger (or the guardian and custodian of granaries),
Because this (travel) is their work and profession.'
📚 Al-Khisal, p. 302
Imam Sadiq (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Five groups of people, whether they are traveling or at home, perform the prayer and fast in full:
The mukari, meaning the one who rents out a mount,
And the kari, meaning the one who rents it,
And the 'ushtaqan, who is the messenger,
And the shepherd,
And the sailor,
Because (travel) is their act, work, and profession.'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 3, p. 214
Imam Baqir (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Seven people do not pray shortened:
The tax collector who goes around in his area,
And the emir who goes around in his emirate,
And the merchant who goes around in his trade from this market to that market,
And the shepherd,
And the nomad who seeks places of rain and greenery,
And the person who seeks to hunt, and his intention for hunting is worldly entertainment,
And the highwayman who robs.'
✅ In the above narrations and similar ones, individuals who are constantly on the move and do not have a residence and for whom traveling is their work and profession are commanded to perform their prayer and fast in full. It is observed that performing the prayer in full has been made obligatory for them, and they cannot pray shortened. The excuse of being in a hurry has no effect on their duty to perform the prayer in full.
