Question 113 - Is it obligatory to shave a baby's head on the seventh day?

Answer
✅Answer: On the seventh day of a child's birth, several acts are recommended by the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), one of which is shaving the child's head. A part of the sayings of the Divine Authorities on this matter is presented with a few of the following narrations:
📚 Man La Yahdhuruhu al-Faqih Vol. 3, p. 489
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) was asked about the reason for shaving the newborn's head (on the seventh day); the Imam said: 'It is for the purification and cleansing of the child from the hair (inside) the womb.'
📚 Uyun Akhbar al-Ridha Vol. 2, p. 125
Translation: Imam Ridha (peace be upon him) wrote in his letter to Ma'mun: 'Aqiqah is obligatory for the newborn, whether a boy or a girl, as is naming the child and shaving his head on the seventh day and that gold or silver equal to the weight of his hair be given in charity (is obligatory).'
📚 Qurb al-Isnad, p. 297
Translation: Imam Kadhim (peace be upon him) said in a narration: '...on the seventh day, the child's head is shaved, and gold or silver equal to its weight is given in charity. So if he does not have the financial ability for (charity), he should take the child's hair (keep it) or know its weight, and when he finds the financial ability, he should give that much in charity.'
📚 Al-Kafi Vol. 6, p. 33
Translation: Jamil said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about Aqiqah, shaving the head, and naming, which one is done first? The Imam said: 'All these things are done at the same time and hour; the child's head is shaved, (a sheep) is slaughtered for him, and he is named.'
✅Many narrations have been reported in Shi'a hadith collections emphasizing the shaving of a child's head, whether boy or girl, on the seventh day and giving charity equal to its weight in gold or silver. It is fitting for the followers of this family to be diligent in this valuable act, which has been referred to as a 'tradition' in some narrations and as 'obligatory' in the narration of Imam Ridha (peace be upon him) mentioned above.
Very important traditions for the newborn on the seventh day have been received from the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), and it is recommended to strive to learn them and be aware of their etiquette.
