Question 823: Is the excrement of non-halal birds, such as crows, ravens, eagles, and parrots, considered najis (impure)?
Answer
✅Answer: Consider the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.58
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Whatever flies, its urine and excrement are not problematic.
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol.1, p.283
Ali (peace be upon him) said: The excrement of chickens and pigeons is not problematic if it reaches clothes.
📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.406
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Do not wash your clothes from the urine of what is not eaten.
📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.57
Imam Baqir and Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them) said: Do not wash your clothes from the urine of what is eaten.
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol.1, p.266
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Whatever is eaten, what comes out of it (urine, milk, saliva, feces, nasal mucus) is not problematic.
📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.57
Zarara narrated that Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them) considered the urine of domestic animals (donkey, mule, horse) that reaches clothes to be disliked, because even though their meat is halal, Allah did not create them to be eaten.
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol.1, p.247
Abdul Rahman said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about some animal urines that reach a person. He replied: Wash the urine of donkey, horse, and mule, and whatever is eaten, its urine is not problematic.
✅According to narrations 1 and 2, the urine and excrement of birds, whether halal or non-halal, are not problematic and do not require washing.
However, for other animals: for those that are halal to eat (e.g., cow, sheep, camel), their urine, feces, saliva, or any excretion does not require purification, but for animals that are haram to eat, their urine and feces must be washed.
For horses, mules, and donkeys, although their meat is halal, certain narrations specify that their urine and feces should be washed because they were not created to be eaten. Most narrations only mention washing their urine, and it is not obligatory, given the leniency in the narrations.
